Hi everyone,
As I am currently on placement year, I thought it would be a good time to reflect on the types of projects I have worked on and modules I have completed in my past two years as a Fashion Promotion and Communication student at Kingston.
First year
These are the modules and projects I completed in my first year.
Fashion Context: This was all about PR and marketing, analysing brands and using marketing and business strategies, creating brand reports and new communication plans.
Professional Practice: A really creative module where we would have workshops in styling, photography, graphic design, image making etc. The project we worked on was creating a zine, so you could really focus on a medium that interests you or try a few.
CHS (Critical historical studies): In this module we learnt about the different histories and concepts in the fashion industry. Analysing images and text. The assignments for this are essays.
Fashion Promotion and Communication: This was really a mix of everything, putting all we had learnt into practice to work on projects that we could really be asked to do in industry. Such as proposing collaborations and creating campaigns, making sure we could back up our proposals with strong research.
And my projects and modules for second year.
Fashion Direction: This module was about responding to briefs with clients and brands in mind. We worked in groups each taking on specific roles. The first project involved proposing a concept to elevate a brand and then creating the deliverables which included a fashion film, publication and customized garments. The second was a short project to pitch a photoshoot concept to celebrate a brands archive pieces in a contemporary sense and execute the photoshoot within a short industry like time frame.
Professional Practice 2: This continued from first year with projects including creating a visual brand and trend report and then using that report to create a campaign. Working with WGSN to see how brands can incorporate trends to stay relevant to the customer.
CHS: We continued on with a range of histories, concepts and theories. Writing an essay for our first assignment, choosing a topic from the list of those we have studied so far. Then our second assignment we worked on a proposal for our dissertation and started our research to support this proposal.
Fashion Promotion and Communication 2: This may have been one of my favourite modules this year as we worked on a real diverse range of exciting projects. The first being proposing a concept for an exhibition, working with a local exhibition space and pitching it to them. The second project was putting on an event as a group, which was really fun to work on a live project and attend all the other exciting events. Another project was in collaboration with the psychology and sociology students to create a creative output in response to a social issue and then showcase it in an exhibition on campus. And the final project consisted of responding to a brief/theme with any creative output that we felt was fitting to our audience and message. I really enjoyed how open the projects are allowing you to be very creative and explore your areas of interest.
I hope this gives a good overview of what it can look like to study this course. Things do change each year, but this should still hopefully give you a general idea. Any questions don’t hesitate to ask 😊
