Those are solid choices! All of the unis you listed have well-respected law departments, and places like Leicester, NTU and Northumbria are especially known for good teaching and strong employability.

Loughborough is newer for law but has great facilities and student life. Honestly, don’t worry about your list focus on which course structure and campus environment you prefer. Law is what you make of it, and you can do well anywhere with the right effort.

Hey @ayomidé

I am currently in my third year of studying law at the University of Leicester so I can give you an overview of how I have found my time here.

In terms of the teaching, you have lectures and tutorials. You have 2/3 weekly lectures and one tutorial every two weeks per module. I find majority of my lecturers engaging and good at explaining complex topics. I really like that we have 'Office Hours'. These are set times that you can go to a lecturers office to ask them questions about academic content. I have found this really useful because it helps me to understand any content I may have been confused about in lectures!

Additionally, you study all the compulsory modules in Year 1 and Year 2. Year 3 is entirely optional. I think this is useful as you have a better idea of what area of law you are interested in by third year. This means that you can personalise your third year to your careers aspirations. For example, I am pursuing commercial law so I have picked almost all commercial law related modules.

There is also so much to get involved in at Leicester! This has helped me to grow in confidence but also improve my CV/applications which helped me to get a training contract!

I joined the University of Leicester Law Society and that is where I have had great experiences to pursue my career, but more importantly, a way in which I have met so many of my friends.

There are lots of different competitions organised by the Law Society. In my first year, I participated in a negotiation competition and acted as a client in a client witness competition. In my second year, I was the Mock Trial Officer which meant I organised all of the mock trial competitions alongside the other Mock Trial Officer. In my third year, I tried out mooting for the first time and won the speed mooting competition!

There are lots of career events which are organised by the Careers Team and focus on a career at the bar, as a solicitor as well as alternative careers. Firms frequently come to Leicester and hold events in the evening. This is a great way to find out the specifics about a firm and gain application advice. Each year, there is a Law Fair where there are lots of chambers and firms for you to go and network with. This year, we have the first ever Careers Dinner where students can network with professionals over a delicious two-course meal!

There are also social events to meet other law students. Every year there is the Law Ball, Awards Night and other events throughout the year such as movie nights!

I also joined the Pro Bono Society. This consists of a large variety of Pro Bono projects which students can get involved in to help give back to the public. I strongly recommend looking at the University of Leicester Pro Bono Website to see the different projects available and which one best aligns with your interest.

This year, I am the Student Director of the University of Leicester Legal Advice Clinic. Being part of the Legal Advice Clinic is incredibly rewarding as we give free legal advice to members of the public under the supervision of a solicitor. I have also gotten a chance to experience different areas of law and this has helped me to understand what areas I find most interesting.

It is also important to remember that there is a lot more to university then the subject you study. Throughout my time at Leicester I have been involved in other societies (Walk and Talk Society, Boat Club) and got involved in all the universities have to offer (staying in university accom my first year, utilised university services such as the careers & employability service, complete part-time work through the university).

If you have any other questions about studying law at Leicester, or even about living in Leicester, then please feel free to ask! ☺️ You are doing the right thing by trying to get different opinions of the universities you are interested in. I would also recommend trying to visit each university to see if you can picture yourself there!

Lots of people apply to law at those unis, so your choices definitely aren’t bad. NTU is strong for practical law and placements, Manchester Met has good facilities and a more coursework-heavy law degree (The city location is also really good), Leicester has a long-standing academic reputation, Loughborough’s law school is newer but growing quickly with great campus support, and Northumbria is known for practical legal training and its MLaw route.
All of them are solid options focus on which course structure and location suit you best.

Hope this helps.
