Applying for Allied health courses

Hello! I'm currently applying for allied health courses for sep 2026 specifically Radiography and Podiatry. I am way more interested in podiatry and after much thinking and comparing the two courses it is my first choice, unfortunately moving out of london is not an option and there's currently only one uni that offers Podiatry bsc in london. I have five choices on my UCAS. I have already picked out unis but I don't know what to base my personal statement or other stuff of my application on and I really only have Radiography work experinece. I do meet the grade and subject requirements for both Radiography and Podiatry. I even exceed the grade requirements. Finding podiatry work experience at this time of the year would be exceedingly difficult.

Any advice on what to do?

You don’t need podiatry-specific work experience to aply...most unis just want to see that you understand the role and can link your skills to it. You can use your radiography experience to show communication, patient care, teamwork, and interest in healthcare in general. Then explain why podiatry appeals to you (hands-on work, long-term patient relationships, biomechanics, etc).

You can also mention research you’ve done, taster days, or speaking to professionals if you can’t get formal work experience. It’s completely fine and many applicants are in the same position.

You don't need podiatry work experience but a day of shadowing experience with a podiatrist would be good to add to your PS if you can arrange it soon. If not, search for 'a day in the life of a podiatrist' videos online produced by NHS trusts. Radiography courses can be competitive so having a PS that doesn't focus on it might reduce your chances. However, if podiatry is your goal, focus your statement on that. The U of EL course has a high offer rate (around 74%) so you are in with a good chance. Unis want to see that you understand the role you are applying for (hence the shadowing requirement), but they also want to see that you can deal with the general public. Reflect on your work/volunteering experience and relate what you have learnt to the NHS values and 6 Cs. Your work/volunteering experience can be any public-facing role - cafe, supermarket, care home, charity shop, etc.

Arrange an appointment with a podiatrist, pay the £30ish consultation fee, chat with the pod about the profession for half an hour, look around the treatment room, then state that as your direct experience. It's what I did and it worked. It's 30 quid, but worth it if you're really keen on getting on to the course.
