When choosing the best uni for social work, what should I really be looking for?

I really want to become a social worker, but I’m still figuring out what to look for in a university program. I know I want a place that will prepare me to support people and make a real difference, but I’m not sure which courses, qualifications, or opportunities I should be focusing on. With so many universities offering different pathways, I’m trying to understand what matters most so I can choose a program that fits my goals and helps me grow into the kind of social worker I want to be.

Hi,
I hope you are well! 😊
My friend has just graduated in Social Work and I have another friend who is also on the Social Work programme here at Kent. A career as a Social Worker sounds so rewarding, and its so great to see that you are thinking about your options and routes in, and want to make a difference😊

Finding a course and university which suits all of your needs is not an easy task, especially when there are lots of different options and pathways. My background is in Social Science, and so Social Work is not my area of expertise! However, we have an open day this Saturday (22nd November) at our Medway Campus where the course is based, which you are welcome to come along to and ask any questions you might have! You can find out more information and sign up to the open day here.

I understand that you might not be local to Medway in Kent, and I appreciate the open day is in just a few days, so if you have any specific questions about studying Social Work, or the different routes in, or even about the area of Social Work you would like to go into, then let me know, as I can see if there is someone available on Saturday for me to speak to, and then I can pass the advice and information back onto yourself🙂

I hope this helps!

Best wishes,
Josie

Hi,
To work as a social worker you need a social work degree. The direct route is a social work BA/BSc. you can do a similar degree and do a masters in social work or a pathway to social work programme with a LA but these are highly competitive. Either way you’ll need a social work degree

I have appointments for Uni of Leeds, Uni of Nottingham, Uni of Edinburgh, Queen’s Uni Belfast and Uni of York all for Social Work! I have an offer from Leeds post interview, an interview for York tomorrow and one for Notts. Just waiting for Belfast as Edinburgh doesn’t interview. Feel free to ask me anything!

Hi,

I hope you are well and have been able to find out a bit more about studying Social Work!😊

If you are still looking for some support or guidance on what to look for in a course, or what you might need for a career in Social Work, I have been in touch with one of our lecturers from the department who is very happy to meet with you online to provide some guidance! I shared your initial post with them and they have provided a more general response which will help to answer a few of your initial questions:

"Is great to see your passion for social work. There are various routes to qualify as a social worker. A common route is the BA in Social Work- we offer this here at the University of Kent. The course is 3 years long and covers key areas of knowledge that is needed in social work (theories, law, communication skills, lifespan development among others). It also includes two placements where students learn by practicing what they have learned. Here at Kent we have a strong focus on social justice, seeing social work as a force for social change, advocacy and partnership with people who have lived experience of social work/social care"

They are happy to provide their email and have a meeting online with you in the new year if you have any further questions. Let me know if this is something you are interested in and I can provide their email via a private message😊

Have a lovely holiday break!❄️
Best wishes,
Josie
