Lost GCSE Certificates

Hello!

I've applied for BSc Mental Health Nursing starting in January 2026 at the University of Greenwich.

I received an email today that said I need to provide my GCSE certificates, however I took my GCSEs in 2011 and I no longer have the certificates. I definitely did pass all of my GCSEs and I have my A Level certificates.

I contacted my school to find out which exam boards I took my GCSEs with but they said they don't have records going back that far. I've checked the exam board websites (AQA, Edexcel, OCR - I'm sure it's one or two of those) but they charge a lot for you to get certificate copies and that is without even knowing whether you took the exams with them! If you do request copies they can also take up to 20 working days but in the email I received from admissions, it says they want me to provide these by 10th December, so I am really cutting it fine!

I replied to admissions to let them know the situation so I will await their reply.

I am so worried now that I won't be able to move forward with my application. It seems unusual to me that they would want to see the certificates, especially when I have A levels? Or am I mistaken?

Whilst I await their response, what should I expect? Should I just take the leap and pay the extortionate amounts to retrieve copies from the exam boards when I don't even know for sure which have my results? If I can't get copies in time for the deadline, will I not be able to move forward?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi,
I hope you are well! 😊

I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble locating your certificates, and I understand this must be stressful for you. Have the University of Greenwich got back to you yet? Is there a quicker way you might be able to get a response, for example calling their admissions team? If you are able to call them I would explain your situation and your worries about progressing with your application. I'm just thinking the quicker you hear back from the university the better, and then you can move forward with requesting the certificates if you need too, as I know they are quite expensive to request!🙂 Were there specific grades that you needed at GCSE for the course? They may want to see the grades you achieved?

I hope this helps! I'm sorry its not a definite answer, but I would call them to get their answer first🙂

Best wishes,
Josie

They need to check you have Maths and English GCSE I suspect. Contact them and explain.

Is there no-one at your old school e.g exams officer, teachers that knows which boards you took. I find it pretty amazing they have no records as we keep copies of results back many years.

Your ULN should be on your A level certificates and read the above as to how you and the uni can verify your results.
