Economics personal statement

Hi, I am doing my personal statement and I'm trying to fit 2 books into the question 2 section, these are Freakonomics and Intermediate Microeconomics by Hal Varian. I am struggling to decide which topics from the books i should write about and link them together. I am applying for business econ, industrial econ and maybe econ and management.

Hi,
I hope you are well! 😊

Economics sounds really interesting! It is not my background, but I have written a few personal statements now so thought I'd hop on here and try to help you!

Just to check, you are looking at question two, which is How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?

Here are a few questions to ask yourself for this question, which have been taken from our university guidance, and the UCAS website:

Have you studied related subjects, If so what do you find interesting?

Have your studies or previous qualifications given you any transferrable skills which will help you at university? This could include subjects that have allowed you to develop skills for your course (e.g. problem solving, good communication, any analysis skills), or a module or teaching which helped you identify your strengths or interests. This could also include doing your Duke of Edinburgh award, sporting achievements, being a team captain, a prefect, or doing an EPQ (extended project qualification), or even being a mentor.

How are you looking to apply the two books in your answer? Are you wanting to talk about your interest in a topic from the book? It might be best to think about this first, and then think about how this relates to the second question. As your personal statement is a chance for you to showcase your interests, talents and experiences, talk about the sections of the books you want to, and how these relate to the question you are answering. If you wanted to talk about your interest in a certain topic, the first question (Why do you want to study this course or subject?) would be a good way to include this, because this could be inspiration or a motivation for studying the course.

I hope this helps! 😊
Let me know if this makes sense, or if you need any further explanation.

Best wishes,
Josie
