Is this a good grade?

I’m in my first year at uni and I just got my first assignment back and I got a 66/100 I don’t rlly understand university grading yet, can anyone tell me if I should be happy with this or not? Is this good for a first assignment?

What university would this be (more simply is it the Open University or not)?

In my opinion yeah it’s a good grade (usually the equivalent of a 2:1 at least for English Universities), at least from a humanities standpoint.

Are you happy with the grade? Whether you should be happy or not depends on yourself and what you’re aiming for rather than what TSR says.

According to the university’s library website 66% is a 2:1 as standard. I’d personally be happy with that as first grade but then again depends on your personal expectations for that assignment or in general.

I personally think that you should be happy but I can’t tell how you should feel about your grades, that’s down to yourself.

Hi there,

66% is a solid 2:1 grade which is great, especially for your first assignment!

Here is the typical grade system for most UK university courses:

70-100% - 1st class (highest classification)
60-69% - 2:1 / upper second class
50-59% - 2:2 / lower second class
40-49% - 3rd class (pass grade)
0-39% - fail

Those are the options for classifications that you end up graduating with, so that's how most universities give grades back, so your 66% is currently a solid 2:1 which is amazing!

I believe at ARU, they only take into account your grades from second and third year when calculating your final grade (the classification you will graduate with), so your grades don't matter too much in first year. That being said, that isn't a reason to not try! First year is great for developing your writing skills as well as other things like critical thinking and data analysis, so when you start second year and your grades start to count for your final degree qual then you have those skills ready and prepared to use.

You should be proud of your grade for sure! Keep doing what you're doing

It's also worth saying that you should see if ARU has an academic achievement/success team - we have one at LJMU and they're really helpful with assignments. They can read your essays and help with structure, they run writing skills workshops as well as maths and stats workshops which really help boost your grades!

Congratulations

Hi there,

I would say this is a great grade and I would be happy with that, especially for your first assignment! Usually 66% would be a 2:1 which is a great grade. As others have said sometimes the first year doesn't count so it might not matter in terms of your final grade, but it is still a really good foundation to see how to structure a uni assignment.

I thought I could give you some of my best tips for getting a good grade at uni in case any of this helps you at all throughout your time at uni:

Start your work as soon as you can so that you have plenty of time to refine your work and made a few drafts. It sounds obvious but it can be hard to actually get yourself to do it, so just try and start as soon as you can so that you have time to make the work as good as you can.

Ask your tutors for help whenever you need it as they are there to help you so make sure you email them if you need it and try and see if they will help you. Also, making the most of any formative feedback opportunities as this is how you will get the best grade you can.

Use the marking rubric and follow it as closely as you can. I sometimes find printing the rubric out helps me to see which bits I have and haven't included and I highlight the parts that I have done so I can see what needs including for the grade I want.

For exams, the most important thing is finding the revision style that works for you. There are lost of different techniques that you can use so see which one works the best for you by trying a few different ones out.

Talk to your peers if you are stuck as they will be able to help you. It is a great idea to keep talking to them and help each other out (to an extent!).

I hope some of this helps,

Hiya!

Congratulations, 66% is a great grade to receive on an assignment and is definitely on the right track! The grading system can seem a bit confusing at first but once you get your head around it, it will get much easier 🙂

What are you studying and have you been enjoying it so far?

Good morning!

My name is Anna and I’ve been at ARU since January 2021, so I hope my experience will be helpful

I’d like to start saying in my home country we had totally different grading systems, so after getting my first ARU assignment back I felt exactly the same as you did! I got a 68 in that paper and considering the max (100) I felt like I did terrible! So I contacted my course leader and asked her to explain me how I could have done better, because I wanted more from myself!

And it was at that time I understood that grading is totally different than it looks! ARU (and basically almost all the other British unis) use this kind of system:

0-40% Fail

40-49% Third class (but passed)

50-59% Lower Second class (2:2)

60-69% Upper Second class (2:1)

70% and up First class (1st)

We as students need to see it as grades bands/groups.

Your grade (66) means you got a beautiful grade in the second band of grades!! And it’s just your first grade: imagine what will happen in the future ones 🙂 Suggestion: focus on the band the grade you’ll receive lands on, compared to the actual grade out of 💯!

I personally feel like you should be really proud of yourself, cause I am! You set a great starting point for your career at ARU

I do still feel like saying you should go to your module leader or course leader with the paper to have it analysed: it’s always good to ask how to improve and where we could have done more!

Hope this helps!!

Best,

Anna

Hello!

60-69 percent is a 2:1, which is good for your first assignment! Though, if you want to increase this here is some advice:

Always talk with your course leaders and lecturers as much as you can, and don't be afraid to email them if you are struggling. That's what they're here for, there's no such thing as a stupid question. You can also always ask them to check your work over if you are unsure on how to progress

If they are not available for any reason a great second option is asking your classmates for peer feedback, don't be afraid to! It can be really helpful when you need a new set of eyes to go over your work.

read and understand your modules learning outcomes, they will be different for each course and are the best way to make sure your on the right track. You can find these on canvas by selecting "module definition form" from the menu on the left hand side for each of your modules.

Hi there,

Just jumping into add to the great advice you've already had.

I got a 65 for my first assessment so very similar to you, and I was happy with it. If you're getting a 2:1 on your first assessment with no feedback from previous assessments to work with, that's a really solid start and shows that you already are understanding and working with your content and uni-level writing.

Next time you do an assignment, make sure to have this one's feedback next to you so you can remember what things you've been suggested to work on.

Great start, keep it up and hope the academic year's going well so far!

Hi Anom,

It can take a while to get to grips with the university grading system. Generally a 66 represents a 2:1 which is a great grade, especially for your first semester in first year. I recommend asking your university their bachelors degree classifications, or simply seeing if your university has this information shared online.

If your wanting to understand what employers are expecting, research into graduate schemes you are interested in and they may detail the grade they desire.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,
-Sophia (University of Lancashire)

Hi @Anonymous 👋

Hope you are well. Yes it is a pretty good score for your first assignment! That would be a 2.1 generally and that is good. How are you feeling about it? You may have expected a higher score but remember this is your first assignment and there will be time to improve so do not worry. Make sure you read any feedback they give you and take the time to reflect so you can improve next time.

Hello,

Congratulations 😊😊 66 is good in university, it’s a 2:1 and you’re quite close to a first. Anything above 70 is a first, this is great for your first assignment and you can definitely achieve higher grades if you follow the feedback from your tutors.

All the best

Hi there,

Everything above 70 is considered First-Class, which is the highest possible class of a degree. So yes, getting 66 is pretty close and objectively a good grade, though there is definitely some room for improvement
