When should I start work experience? (Year 11)

I’m a Year 11 student, obviously aspiring to be a veterinarian.

As I’m studying for my GCSEs, I don’t know if it’s a good idea to start any sort of work experience. My predicted grades are currently average and although I’m sure I can get minimum 7s in the real thing, it’ll take a lot of hard work and I might just cripple from the pressure. Either work experience will be a breath of fresh air for me or another thing on my plate.

I really want to apply to a Pre-Vet Summer School and this requires excellent grades and lots of animal experience. Although I’ve cared for (stray) cats and their litters and missed days of school just to treat and tend to my sickly cockatiel, I don’t think that this is enough.

I know that it’s really difficult to get a placement at practices but I haven’t tried yet because right now, I think that’s too much for me. It might be best for when I’m in Year 12. So, I‘d like to do volunteering on a farm soon, so that I could also get some lambing experience. I have found a farm but I don’t know when I should start or apply or what to say when I apply. I know that lambing season is peak in the Spring but I don’t know if it’s a clever thing to do when I’ll be possibly stressed out with GCSEs being at its peak. I mean, I could try now but it’s also winter - dark and freezing cold.

Imo, I would try and get work experience as soon as possible. I hated having to try and cram as much work experience i could get before sending off my application this year and it ended up causing me more stress. Take this with a pinch of salt though, your grades are still really important and should be a priority to get the minimum grades for entry requirements, so dont stress more about getting work experience than school.

Hi.
It’s really great you’re thinking about this, but I would honestly recommend you don’t do any work experience during Year 11.
Work experience is undoubtedly important to you future vet application, but Year 11, especially around Easter, can get extremely hectic and stressful and I argue focusing on getting good grades at GCSE’s is far more important then work experience at this stage.
However, I would still highly encourage you to look around now and get in contact with as many places as possible to try and book placements for the Year 11 Summer and during Year 12. It is always better to book in earlier than later, as the spaces can get filled quite quickly. Though lambing is such a brilliant work experience placement, I would definitely advise you to talk to the farmer about getting a placement when you’re in Year 12. Lambing very tiring, full on and busy, which I wouldn’t recommend you taking on right before your GCSE’s. However, when you’re in Year 12, I feel like you have more time, it feels more rewarding and it is fresher in your mind for when you reflect on it in your personal statement and in interviews.
So long story short, please focus on your GCSE’s now, but still do contact places and try your best to get booked in work experience for Year 11 Summer and Year 12.
Also, in Year 11 I tried to reach out to as many places as possible and they all rejected me, but at the start of Year 12 I had far more luck and managed to get loads of placements? So maybe don’t worry as much, though I do know everyone’s experience is different. Hope that’s helpful.
