Hi There,

I'm a third year undergraduate history student who also did A-Level History, so hopefully I can help!

I found that making acronyms for certain acts within a certain period. Or you can even do this for important aspects of a specific treaty/act. Let me use the Treaty of Versailles 1919 as an example:

U - Unfair - Reference to the treaty being a Diktat towards Germany

B - Blame - Article 231, which made Germany accept full responsibility for the war

R - Reparations - References the amount Germany was ordered to pay for damages, 33 Billion Dollars

A - Arms - Armed forces limits: Limited to 100,000 men with NO airforce

T - Territory - Reference to the territory lost (13%) such as losing Alsace-Lorraine to France.

Now, if you read this from the top down, you get UBRAT (easy to remember if you say it like U-BRAT). You then create a few of these to remember the key information, and just keep practising.

I appreciate that this doesn't link to your studies of tudors and Russia, however this is an example of a study technique that used to work for me - even if it is a little rouge.

Other than acronyms, Quizlet was also a good tool to have. Perhaps get a classmate or your guardians to test you once you feel confident enough. It will all just take practice.

I wish you the best of luck! If you put in the work and reach for the A, I am sure you will have the best shot at achieving one!

Need anything else? Let me know!

For me, the way I remember facts and write essays well is through flashcards. I always make my flashcards very vague questions, something like 'how did African American rights develop 1865-1890?' (I do US history). I then use this flashcard as effectively an argument that I would use in an essay. This allows for me to easily structure my answers and recall examples in exams. I also always add way more detail than I will ever have to remember, so when I forget some things it doesn't affect me in the exam. I haven't sat my A Levels yet (so you can take my advice as just that), but my technique works for me and I have been consistently scoring A* marks and am predicted an A*. Ultimately though, it's probably best to find the technique that works best for you - good luck!
