Is using the Google AI as bad as using Chat GPT??

Hi, I'm in Y12, studying English Literature, History (and Art). I kind of simultaneously hate and love AI, it definitely makes my brain a lot slower but sometimes its really useful. I mostly use google though. Sometimes when I have a quote for English and I have analysed the heck out of it, I will put it into google and see if there is anything I have missed (which maybe defeats the point a bit because analysis is meant to be 'original', but what is actually original in this day of age??) I also use google for when I'm making flashcards for history and the textbook is not helping. Now google has this AI feature, (which is really useful ngl when you are doing a quick search and want a summary) but I'm just worried that using it rather than going through the websites etc myself will make me dumber and more likely to plagiarise/even less original. Should I try and avoid it or is that stupid? Is it cheating to use google?? I know most of my friends rely on Chat GPT, I just want to retain my critical thinking skills (what's left of them anyways). Lowkey a luddite, would happily go back to the 80s/90s and study the old fashioned way with textbooks lol, I think it was much simpler.

I don't think that googling things to see if there's anything you missed in your analysis is OK, given it entirely misses the point that you won't have access to the internet during your exams. The same idea applies to the Google AI summary, which as a sidenote, I've found to say factually incorrect information sometimes. There's also a strong correlation between the use of AI and loss of critical thinking skills so maybe don't use AI to do your homework?

Hi @eimme,

When it comes to AI, no matter the platform whether it is chatgpt or google AI, it really is the same. However, I do not think using AI as a tool is an issue. It can be an excellent guide and I find it can answer questions more specifically. Make sure you are heading onto websites to fact check this information, the more reliable the website the better, and do not just copy.

Additionally, using it to analyse isn't necessarily bad depending on how you are using it. Make sure you do your own analysis first and get it marked so its entirely your own. From there you could use AI and google to get ideas of what you could have added, this way you are learning from it and you can apply this new knowledge to your next quote.

Overall, just make sure you are not actually using it on work you are submitting, I recommend just using it when reflecting on marked work as a tool to bring forward new ideas and then spend time researching yourself to learn about it further.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,
-Sophia (University of Lancashire)

I don't use AI to do my homework 😊 I occasionally use it for flashcards when I need a summary. I find it interesting to see if there are any perspectives/different angles that I have missed when I am looking at quotes, I am not so brain dead as to just copy down everything that AI says. I have found it to be very inaccurate in the past, so I am wary of that. Thank you for you concern lol.
