Disability Support at UoR

At the University of Reading, we are deeply committed to creating and maintaining an inclusive campus environment. Inclusion in regards to
Disability, to us means more than access, it reflects our dedication to empowerment, equity, and the cultivation of a supportive culture that enables every student to thrive academically, professionally with our dedicated careers service and personally. Our approach focuses on ensuring that students feel seen, supported, and equipped to succeed, regardless of their individual circumstances or needs. Including supporting those students living with us on campus in our accommodation.

As someone who has personally accessed the Disability Advisory Service (DAS) for additional academic support, I have experienced firsthand the dedication and professionalism of the team. The staff have consistently been approachable, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in helping students navigate academic challenges. While my own interactions have primarily involved academic adjustments, I recognise that the service also supports students requiring physical, and other practical accommodations, Including in regards to learning / sensory disabilities. This breadth of provision highlights the wide range of tailored support available, ensuring that students with diverse needs can access appropriate assistance throughout their studies and wider student life, via our accessible student union sports clubs and funding available for this.

However, like any uni, we acknowledge that there is always more to be done and I have certainly been active in raising improvements that need to be made.

Over the past year, the University has expanded its programme of awareness-raising events and increased the availability of practical support initiatives, reflecting our commitment to continual improvement which we understand is a must. We also adopt an iterative approach to inclusion, regularly reviewing our policies and services to identify areas for enhancement.

Student feedback plays a central role in shaping these developments. We actively encourage students to share their experiences and suggestions through multiple feedback mechanisms offered throughout the academic year. These include open forums and consultation sessions facilitated by the Inclusion & Communities Full-Time Officer (+ our opportunities / welfare / academic full time officers too) and the Disability Part-Time Officer. This ongoing dialogue helps ensure that changes are responsive, collaborative, and reflective of the lived experiences of our student community.
