Chinese studies at Cambridge Under AMES

Hi, I’m a prospective student looking to study Chinese at Cambridge at Newnham I’ve got an interview but I’m not sure what to prepare for as the coarse website has no information. Would anyone be able to please tell me a bit more about the structure of their interview? Is their a part where you are asked to look at an unseen text?

hi im applying to study chinese next year and quite a lot of students from my school have gotten into oxbridge to study chinese! i think they’ll give you a poem beforehand and you’ll have to analyse it - this is true for oxford, not sure about cambridge..

hey i'm also applying for Chinese for 2027 entry at Oxford (hopefully at the Queen's College). I've literally never met anyone who wants to study chinese so this is so cool to find a whole thread abt it!! Can i quickly ask what your stats are so I can see other applicants and how I compare??? I've been really worried abt my GCSEs as my average grade was around 6.4 so I thought it would bring me down quite a bit holistically. Good luck!

I can't comment on the interview since I basically transferred from a different course (it wasn't conventional) but lmk if you have questions about AMES at Cambridge

Hi I’ve just got an offer to study Chinese at Cambridge! I agree that it’s really niche so it’s nice to meet other people interested in the subject. In terms of stats I would say don’t worry too much about GCSEs and focus on A Levels and supercurriculars - especially for Chinese I think showing your interest in the subject is the most important thing!

however i was overall above average than my school - my school was 5.69, my council was 5.07 and I was still 6.4

A levels in recent assessment: Chinese (A), Politics (A*), English (B/A Borderline)

volunteering and supercurriculars:
