A parents’ and carers’ guide: what’s the value of a degree?

If you’re a parent or carer of a young person that’s thinking about university, it can feel overwhelming helping them with such a big decision. So, we’re here to help break it down.

University is about so much more than getting a degree. It’s an investment in your child’s future and is one of the most powerful financial decisions a young person can make.

It’s a chance to shape the person your child becomes, helping them to grow, explore and experience a future full of possibilities. Higher education is still the most trusted route that opens doors to lots of careers.

Here’s some of the key reasons why a degree is worth it:

1. A gateway to careers

HE qualifications open the door for graduates to a wide number of career opportunities, and choosing a career-focused course can make a big difference. Look for a university that gives you the opportunity to do work experience or a placement too.

Our students gain industry exposure through hands-on projects, placements, high-profile competitions and our extensive networks locally, nationally and internationally. It’s why our graduates are among the most employable in the UK and students voted us the 3rd best university nationwide for career prospects in the 2025 Whatuni Student Choice Awards.

2. Higher earning potential over a lifetime

Graduates go on to earn, on average, between £200,000 and £400,000 more than non-graduates over their lifetime (2025 HEPI report: UK Higher Education Public Perceptions vs Reality)

3. Increased employability and skills development

Career-focused courses help students build the skills they need for the workplace of the future, including entrepreneurial, practical and technical skills.

At University of Staffordshire, learning is hands-on. Whether that’s treating patients on our hospital wards at our Centre for Health Innovation in Stafford, gathering evidence from a crime scene at our Stoke-on-Trent campus, or building your own android app at University of Staffordshire London.

4. Improved long-term health

University graduates have on average better physical and mental health in their lifetime (UK Government, The Benefits of Higher Education Participation for Individuals and Society)

5. The opportunity to meet new people from all around the world and make lifelong friends

For many, this is a huge part of the university experience. It’s no surprise that more than nine out of 10 graduates would still go to university if they made the choice all over again. (2025 HEPI report: UK Higher Education Public Perceptions vs Reality)

So, what next?

Choose a type of university. Explore what type of campus suits your child best. Campus vs City there’s no right or wrong answer, and there are benefits to both. Esports student Kurtis talks more about living in Stoke-on-Trent here.
