Deadline coming soon, how should you prepare?

As we all know exam season is getting closer and closer, its time for all of us to start preparing.

Here’s how I prepare for deadlines and exams as someone who really prioritises good grades:
First, I set myself a study routine when nearing deadlines. I choose study environments that I work best in, usually it’s either my room or in cafes ☕📖. If I am studying outside, I’d like to keep distractions to a minimal, no phone, no friends, no talking unless on breaks.

Divide the workload and spread it over the days.

If my deadline is in 2 weeks, then I’ll probably need 5-6 overall days to write and finalise the essay. It’s probably better not to do them 5 days in a row to avoid burnout (unless if you’re motivated by stress 😛). An example of dividing the workload can look like this:

Day 1 is for background research, writing the introduction and outlining the main body.
Day 2 can focus on writing the main body, using your research to build clear arguments.
Day 3 is for refining and adding the analysis.
Day 4 could be for your conclusion and final tweaks
Day 5 can be spent proofreading

Always reference as you write, don’t leave referencing last because it can take hours and you’ll be too distracted to notice the mistakes. You can use referencing tools like Scribbr and MyBib as you’re writing your essay to save yourself time. Keep an eye on the referencing format that is required by your university.

Finally, if it’s an exam, try to review and test yourself on the materials after finishing revision. This can be done by using flashcards, practice or past papers, quizzes or explaining concepts out loud as if teaching someone else. Secret tip? 🫣 explaining/teaching out loud helps consolidate information the best and makes recalling information easier. Using quizzes, you can identify gaps in your knowledge and areas where you need to top up on studying.

Do you have a study routine? ☺️

Hi!

This is a great idea so I thought would add some of my tips for when it is coming up to deadline season:

Try to plan your weeks as well as you can. I like to write everything in my calendar so that I can easily see everything that I need to do and therefore how much time I have to do it. This helps em to see when I can do fun things and it reassures me that I can get everything done!

When it gets really close, I like to plan my days out too. So for example on Monday I have 5 hours to work so I will break each hour/half an hour into what I need to do so that I know I am getting everything I need to do done and I can see that it will be finished.

Planning fun things around uni work is a good idea too. You can't just work all of the time so I like to have things to look forward to to keep me motivated.

I like to keep talking to my friends and family as well, just to again keep me motivated and so I feel like I am still in the loop with everything and not just doing work all the time!

Just in general, making sure you are eating and sleeping well is so important! It can be so easy to neglect these things but they are so important.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy - SHU student ambassador 🙂
