state school students!!! how are you guys finding Durham?? like community, accom and colleges - absolutely terrified about the stereotypes lmao.
Hey!
Although I am an international student, I also had the same fears about Durham being exactly how it is stereotyped to be but honestly my experience here is completely different to what I expected. Yes, there are a lot of private school students here but at the same time there are a lot of state school students as well and students from disadvantaged backgrounds. I've made friends with people from across school-types, regions in the UK and across the world. Durham has the benefit of bringing so many different types of people together and I am sure you will find your place. Many of the private school students aren't even how they are rumoured to be; most of them are just normal students and I've become friends with quite a few of them.
The university I find has also made it a point to make all its events and socials as accessible as possible through things like the funds and subsidising things like balls. In general, I'd say the university knows the situation it is in and whilst it isn't completely out of the clear yet, it is getting there.
In general, I would say that whilst yes Durham has a lot to do, we still have state school students and we need more state school students (you) to make a more inclusive and better Durham. So, apply! I'm sure you'll love it.

State schooler and northerner here! My college is a lovely bunch and there’s a few people who make some questionable comments and perpetuate the stereotypes but there are also a lot of lovely people. There’s northern society and the 93% club and you’ll find that most people in any society are nice! I know quite a few private schoolers who are genuinely lovely but they could be the exception. Imposter syndrome is real I won’t lie but if you’re a prospective student just know you’ll have earned the right to be here the same way as everyone else and you are good enough! You will find your community even if it takes time because it certainly did me and there will always be comments that make you pull a face but I think that’s inevitable anywhere!
