Townley external grade requirements

Hey, I was just wondering what the grade requirements were for townley grammar, cause I know their website says them but I heard many stories of people getting rejected even when their grades met the boundaries. If your external do you mind telling me what you got so I can have atleast a rough idea of if I will get accepted.
Thanks x

hi! not from townley or in sixth form, but I go to a grammar school similar to townley and am in year 11. basically what we’re told is that internals have the first pick, so let’s say 20 internals get all 7s, meeting the requirement, and 30 externals get all 8s, and there are 30 spots. those 20 internals will get first pick, even though 30 externals got higher grades than the internals. at least I’m pretty sure that’s how it works, we’ve only been told they get first pick and this is what I think it means.
idk if this helped at all, sorry if it didn’t!!

Thanks, that helps a lot,
because I was just wondering if I would be put at a disadvantage if I get the miniumum grade requirement and not the top scores, but by the sounds of it I may 😭

Hi!
I’m at TGS . It’s actually diff. Townley reserves a certain number of places for internals every year that will not be competed for by externals they are 2 completely completely different applicant pools. for example there are 100 spots for internals offered to them . then, if the school sees that only 50 out of 100 internals have accepted the offer they will then move those places for externals. If 13 external applicants apply for one place - this one place is not in competition for by internals. It’s completely separate. I hope that helps!

Thank you so much. That really helps, I thought we were all fighting for the same place, and internals got more spaces than externals😭😭
Btw, are you external or know anyone that came to townley sixth-form externally and what grades they got so I can kind of estimate if I have a chance of getting in x

Hi!
No I’m an internal , I’m applying for 2026 entry in the sixth form- I had a friend from vb who said she got like an 8 in maths , and overall 7’s and 8’s with a few 6’s. Obvs it depends on the subject choice- I’m sure if you applied for a humanity or such you would get in with those grades but for STEM I’d say it’s better to be on the higher side for grades for those subjects bc of the absolute VOLUME of people applying for stem like genuinely I had a sixth form experience day for my school and I’m applying for maths further maths physics and chem, and lit 70% of the year 12 students I spoke to are doing stem… 😀but yeah! I’m sure you’ll be fine!!!

I also want to do stem, but tbh maths is not so much my strong suit. But omds 70% is a lot of students for stem, but thanks for the intel. I hope the results day goes really well for you x

You need to read the over-subscription rules which are here:
https://www.townleygrammar.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Admissions-Policy-26-27.pdf
Page 7 says:
"Sixth Form Oversubscription Criteria
Where external applications for admission exceed the remaining number of places available, the following criteria will be applied to decide which students to admit:
1. Students who are or who have been Looked After Children
2. GCSE Point Score, which will be ranked in descending score order. Students with the highest score will be offered places
3. Siblings. For this priority, sibling includes a full brother or sister, adopted brother or sister, or step/half brother or sister living at the same address
4. Distance from home to school in a straight line"

oh and yes I forgot to mention if you a boy (I’m assuming due to the username) u have kinda a lower chance bc they Often admit a certain number of girls to boys idk much about that but that’s what my physics teacher told me don’t quote me on that .

Thank you for sending this link. Now that I check, it is quite hard to find on the website, with the current over subscriptio. I think I may have a good chance of getting in

That's what over-subscriptions rules in admissions are for! Hence why this applies here.

Hello, I am also an external and was wondering how much distance affects getting a conditional offer. Also how significant the maths entry test is for getting a conditional offer e.g someone may have high predicted grades but may have not did really well on the test (me lol). Will they not get a conditional offer? Or is maths just removed as a A level choice ?Thank you for reading/ responding.

hi! I’m an internal in yr 11. I did it too- dw if you did bad on the test but get a 9 or 8 you can still do maths but it depends on the availability. there’s essentially a waiting list for those types of applicants. but I’m sure you didn’t do bad

Thank you! However, I did answer all the question so I'm a bit anxious. Also, if you're on the waiting list, do you have to wait before you can go to Townley.

no, I mean if your really stuck on doing maths level then yes I’m assuming it depends on how oversubscribed maths alevel is but if ur willing to switch then it’s fine you don’t have to wait
