University of Warwick circling

Hiya!
I just wanted to ask about the drinking culture at Warwick and circling in particular as an anxious girl who is a light drinker.I would look at joining the dance or F1 society and just wondered what circle is like for these, the FOMO makes me worry that I won’t make friends within the society if I don’t go.
Many thanks!

Hi!
Circling can definitely sound a bit intimidating at first! I would say it really depends on the society - some (especially sports teams) do have a reputation for being more intense with drinking games/ forfeits, but lots of societies are way more chill. Most society exec teams are super understanding and you won’t be pressured to drink if you don’t want to. You can also absolutely circle with just water or a soft drink.

Another thing worth keeping in mind is that circling is just one of many types of socials that societies do. Most do many regular sober events like movie nights, meals, casual meetups, etc so you won’t be missing out if you’re not keen on attending the drinking-heavy events. I’d suggest starting with going to some of the sober socials, seeing how you get on with the people, and then deciding whether you want to go to a circle once you’ve made a few friends so you’re a bit more comfortable.

Hope that helps and best of luck at Warwick!

Best wishes,

You really do not have to worry too much. Circling at Warwick has a big reputation, but it depends a lot on the society. Dance and F1 usually have more relaxed vibes. People often go just to hang out, and it is completely fine to stick with soft drinks. Most societies are quite respectful about it.

Not going to circle does not mean you will miss out on making friends. Most people bond during regular practices, meetings or events rather than drinking socials. Circling is more of an optional extra rather than something you must attend.

Overall, you can join if you feel comfortable, but there is no pressure if you prefer not to.
