Visa Expiring Before Dissertation Resit Worried About Staying in the UK & PSW

Hi everyone,

I recently received my dissertation results, and I’ve now been given a resit submission deadline in March. The problem is that my student visa expires in January, so the resit date is after my visa ends. I really don’t want to leave the UK, and I don’t want to lose my chance to apply for the PSW (Graduate Route).

I am also officially registered with Disability Services at my university, in case that affects anything.

My main questions are:

Can the university issue a new CAS just for the resit period so I can extend my visa?

Has anyone actually managed to get a visa extension for a dissertation resit?

Does the university normally support students in this situation, or is it unlikely?

What are my options if my visa expires before the resit date?

Does being registered with Disability Services help in getting additional support or documentation?

Has any student faced the same issue where the results came late, the resit was scheduled after visa expiry, and they still managed to stay legally and complete the course?

I’m really anxious because this all happened suddenly after receiving my results, and I don’t want to accidentally break immigration rules or miss my eligibility for the PSW.

Any help or real experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello! I’ll have to do a resit for one of my modules next year I think (giving by the horrendous exam I had three days ago). And I’ve been researching a lot on the topic. I think it depends on the school, but usually the uni can give you a new CAS so you can apply for a visa extension for up to 4 months, so you can retake the exam, I think it only works if the exam is in person.

Go and talk to your Personal Tutor or similar, and the International Students team, ASAP and ask for their advice - this will be something they have encountered before, and they will know how to help.
Indeed, these are all questions for your specific uni, IE. Your academic department and your international office/visa team.

Hi there,
I would suggest contacting your course leader or personal tutor as soon as you can about your situation. You might also want to contact your uni's international CAS faculty as they will be able to offer advice and support in regards to your visa situation 🤗
