changing a 2nd undergraduate degree - implications for student finance

Hi,

I am currently doing a 2nd funded undergraduate degree (BSc Psychology). I was doing this part time over 6 years to fit in with my work commitments.
I am in my 2nd year (equivalent to the 2nd half of 1st year if I was full time).
My personal circumstances have changed considerably recently, and I having considered things, I would like to apply for a Pre-reg. Speech and Language therapy degree which would be full-time.
I am aware there is some funding available through NHS bursary but not enough to cover fees and living costs.
I would like to understand whether I could still get funding through SFE? Whether this would be for the full course?

Thanks

Hi Abby,

Speech and Language Therapy is an exception course as long as you're not already registered in that field. So if you were to study this you would be funded for this. Thanks, Jason

Thanks Jason, that was how I understood the regulations. I can confirm, I do not have a registration as a Speech and Language Therapist.
My concern was whether my funding would be reduced as I am changing courses and I am already in the 2nd year (part time so actually equivalent to 1st year) of an exempted 2nd undergrad course? Could you just confirm whether this would be the case? Many thanks

Hi Abby,

When are you looking to change to your new course? Will it be September 2026? Thanks, Jason

Thanks and are you looking to complete the current year or will you be withdrawing before June 2026? If you are withdrawing we would require the university to notify us of this so we can block any further funding from being released to you.

You'd only have funding reduced in year 1 of your new course if you have an overpayment that hasn't been paid off prior to starting the course in September 2026. Thanks, Jason

Hi Jason, thanks for this, I am intending to complete this year of my course before potentially withdrawing. I need to apply for the new course, and I am only in the early stages of planning, and I am aware Speech and Language Therapy courses can be competitive. I might also see if I can get in via the MSc route as well as applying for the BSc route.
I haven't made any decisions yet, just wanted to understand potential implications. Obviously if I do withdraw I would make SFE aware to avoid any potential overpayments.

Thanks
