For good reason.

You only need 3 A-Levels for university entry. Achieving A*A*A* will always look better than achieving AABBB. I'd only suggest taking 4 A-Levels if one of them is Further Mathematics.

Which A-Levels are you taking and why do you wish to do 5 A-Levels?

it wouldn't be aaabb, it'd be A*A*A*A*A in worst case. I've finished the content for maths and fm, have got A* in every maths and almost every fm paper i've done, and my teacher can back me up on that if you don't believe me so i've literally just got 3 a levels, which is completely normal. i want to take 5 a levels because if i don't get into cambridge frmo maths i want to go to bristol med. maths fm phys comp sci chem with chem privately

It's highly likely that you'll be at a disadvantage compared to those who have done biology if you want to do medicine

It's not that I don't believe you. My concern is that if you do miss your grades, you could lose your university place. Are you prepared to handle that worst-case scenario? 🙂

You're applying to Cambridge for mathematics and Bristol for medicine? What about your other options? How do you plan to write multiple personal statements? You need to be sure about the course you are applying for...

I'm seeing nothing but concerns with your situation.

Are you looking to apply to maths and Med in the same cycle? Or Med in the year after if Maths doesn't work out?

Not for Bristol as they only require Chem and one other from a short range of subjects. Lots of other unis only require Chem.

i have other options, but they're not directly relevant to this post but if you must know they're st andrews direct entry 2nd yr maths, imperial and southampton maths. i plan to write multiple personal statements by just writing each personal statement as if anyone else would? i will not miss my grades, or even come close to doing so.

med in cycle after maths; ucas apparently doesn't let you submit multiple personal statements and bristol have said they don't require one but i'd rather take the safe option

Understood. In that case I would just take Chem in the subsequent year assuming your school will permit you to.

won't it be looked at unfavourably taking chemistry, an essential subject, during a gap year?

Assuming you don't miss your grades, you should be absolutely fine getting a place to study mathematics at one of your options. I've only counted 4 options (I hope I haven't miscounted!), but I'm sure you know you can put 5 options down. Good luck!

As already mentioned, I wouldn't worry about taking another A-Level for now. You wouldn't need to at all if you got in for mathematics.

This is why I asked how you plan to write multiple personal statements. I didn't realise you planned to do a separate med cycle if maths didn't work out. 🙂

It might, but if your school couldn't fit it into your timetable, or it was against their policy to allow you to take that many subjects then your ref could comment on that and most unis would take that into account. Ultimately it is up to the uni's own policy - you could check with them beforehand.

I think 5hyl33n is correct that you just need to focus on your priority which is Maths this cycle, rather than trying to get your ducks in a row for plan B at this stage.

youre going to be doing over 925 hours of learning over two years. Are you sure youre okay with that? YOu don't get any advantage for doing 5 a levels over someone who did 4 or 3, and youre better off having 4 or 3 VERY good a levels than 5 good a levels

Why do you want to do 5?
Id do 4- one of them being further maths. But thats it.
Could you not just do 4? (further maths and 3 others)
