How University Gave Me Skills, Experience and Confidence 🎓✨

Hey everyone,

I know a lot of students worry about whether a degree is worth it 💸, especially with costs and thinking about future careers. I'm currently studying Sociology with Psychology and Data Analytics and honestly, I think it's totally worth it 🙂. University gives you theoretical knowledge 📚, practical skills, hands-on experience and confidence 💪 that really help when you start working.

For example, working as a Student Ambassador 🤝gave me the confidence to work with people, which made starting a part-time job a lot easier. I also did a placement in 2nd year with the Greater London Authority🏛️as part of my Data Analytics module- it was a great way to see what the job is actually like and gain real-world skills.

University also helps you get placements, internships and exposes you to career events and networking opportunities 💼, which is a big head start. Plus, you develop transferable skills like research, data analysis, problem solving and communication ✨- all things employers love. Costs can be stressful, but there's support through loans, grants, bursaries, scholarships and part-time work.

Overall, it's not just about the degree- it's about the theoretical knowledge, confidence, skills and experience you gain along the way! 🎓💡

I think most of all it gives you pain. Just the right amount of pain to be able to keep pushing but also makes you question yourself healthily. Once you take that risk and stretch beyond the limits you set for yourself and get exposure to academical style of thinking which requires divergent yet established thinking you can truly have fun by being creative. It really takes believing in yourself to do it. Also many other luxuries too. Mainly though your belief and your desire to try. It’s a risk still and yet it’s stable, it’s an indicator of ambition and yet comfort for the old ways.

Honestly, I'd never heard of this course either at the start! I originally enrolled in Sociology with Psychology and in first year we had a quantitative module that I had actually ended up really enjoying. Anyone who got a 2:1 or above could apply for the Q-step programme and after getting in, my degree was changed to Sociology with Psychology and Data Analytics, which is amazing.

I never thought I'd go down this route, but it's become one of my favourite parts of my degree. It's so practical and hands-on, especially using software like SPSS for data management and analysis, which is a great contrast to my other modules. It gives the whole degree a really nice balance and keeps it interesting!

It's funny how your degree can take you in directions you never expected, but honestly, I'm really glad it did! 😊
