Bristol Aerospace

I read somewhere that unless you get all grade 9s at GCSE then aerospace at Bristol is so competitive that you can forget it - regardless of your predicted A level grades. Is this true or just a rumour?

I got 999888776 (9s in maths and physics) and have a contextual postcode but nothing else about my application is contextual.

Just trying to work out if it’s even worth going to the open day.

It sounds like a rumour to me, and I would doubt that it has much (if any) basis in fact.

The Admissions Statement (at https://www.bristol.ac.uk/study/media/undergraduate/admissions-statements/2026/aerospace.pdf, which you might want to read) says nothing about such a requirement.

In any case, there's nothing wrong with applying to one (or perhaps two) universities where you feel the requirements are a bit of a stretch. You apply to 2-3 where you would expect to reach the required grades, and one with lower grades as a fallback option.

One thing is certain -- if you don't apply to a university you definitely won't get an offer.

If you want official advice on your question, then contact Bristol's admissions team -- contact details are at https://www.bristol.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/contacts/

I don’t think it’s a “requirement” but the course is so oversubscribed that their admissions criteria means that only those with straight 9s at GCSE end up with offers. Most aero courses at the higher ranking universities need A*A*A or A*AA. A higher proportion of those will have large numbers of 9s at GCSE.

If 20% of the decision is based on GCSEs then I can see why this rumour could actually have some substance - that’s what I am trying to work out.

FYI. My son and his friend got aerospace engineering of Bristol, his friend got all grade 9 and my son got 11x Grade 9 & 1xGrade 8.
