Disability support

I want to apply to KCL, Bristol, Nottingham, Sussex and Reading. I get epileptic and non-epileptic seizures though so I was wondering if anyone could tell me a bit more about the support put in place at these unis

Honestly reach out to them and ask directly! Also know regardless of university you should be applicable for disability student allowance, also make sure you read up on your rights so you're aware beforehand what you're legally entitled to

Hi there,

Each university has its own support systems for those with a long-term health condition or a disability, and it is important to check out each university's guidelines.

First, I would recommend going to open days and discussing your concerns with their safeguarding and wellness teams. Universities often offer different types of services and opportunities to support students further. However, they may need a doctor's note or evidence to assist you further with your enquiry.

I would also suggest looking at what type of course adaptations you may need, for example, if you are doing a course with placements, how can the risk be reduced? In these incidents, the university's occupational health team can support you further with the requirements to support you.

Plus, if you are considering moving into student accommodation, it will be important that the accommodation team and the on-site security team are aware of the situation. They can then support if something were to happen, the staff on-site are usually first aid trained.

Hope this information helps and good luck!

Hi! I am a current student here at the University of Reading and here at Reading we have a Disability Advisory Service (DAS), and their main role is to provide information, advice and guidance to current students and applicants who register due to a disability, specific learning difference, long term medical or mental health condition. They can help you get support with:

Creating Individual Learning Plans (ILPs), which reflect reasonable adjustments, and adaptations to teaching, learning, and exam arrangements

Advising teaching staff on reasonable adjustments and how to support students in their studies

Advising students on applying for funding through Disabled Students Allowances

Writing supporting statements for exceptional circumstances requests

Liaising with other teams within the University, such as Support Centres, Accommodation, and Academic colleagues

Helping students in finding the right support for wellbeing, finance, and study needs

They are there to offer support in all aspect of university life. I hope this has been helpful!
