I'm considering ecology or something related, any advice

I'm wanting to switch from engineering and do something related to ecology or biology. What i'm looking for is something where i can study plants and soil, so yes, ecosystems basically, but also i'm interested in sustainable farming and want to learn about crop farming and everything that goes into that as well. I'm somewhat aware that i could do ecology and still get into a field related to farming but i'm not sure what options i have. I know Aberdeen offers plant and soil science, so theres that. Is there anyone who can offer some advice or is doing something similar?

Are you wanting to focus on plants primarily? Some uni offer plant sciences as a degree so you could look at that. Ecology and cons or biology are unlikely to have many if any modules on agriculture and the number of plant related modules is likely very low (tend to be just one per year or even optional). Some unis also offer agriculture degrees but these will also have modules on maintaining livestock which may interest you less.

Hi @mariam45

I'm studying BSc Ecology and Conservation at UEA, and I definitely think this is achievable for you! Looking for courses that either specialise in the field you are looking to go into (like the one you mentioned at Aberdeen), or have options to specialise/ select modules that interest you would be a good starting point for you!

For example, at UEA there are options to do modules in plant biology and about earth's critical zone (soil science). We also share the Norwich Research Park with the John Innes Centre- which is a leading research institute looking at agricultural science, and The Sainsbury Laboratory- which leads research on plant-soil interactions, both of which you can partner with for research projects, industrial placements and internships.

Other universities have more specific degrees too, off the top of my head Harper Adams University has more specific courses on agriculture and land management, for example.

There are also options to specialise later on, if you aren't sure exactly what you want to study just yet, there are lots of Master's qualifications available in this area too. For example, UEA offers MSc Global Plant Health and MSc Plant Genetics and Crop Improvement, which may be of interest to you.

There are lots of options for you in this area of study, I would encourage you to do some research and attend some open days to figure out which courses would fit you best! I hope that is helpful, please let me know if you have any questions!

I was looking for something more geared towards plants, so its something to consider if ecology and conservation doesn't offer much on that front. I'd started off looking into agriculture but a lot of it is business management as well as maintaining livestock like you said. I was thinking i could even do a broad degree, like biology, and get into a field that interested me more later on, but for now i think its best to keep looking for more specific courses

Thanks for all the info Rosie,

something i was considering was doing a broader degree and getting into a agriculture related field later on, so a lot of what you mentioned caters to that possibility. Ill look for a specific course online and i think its a bit late for open days but ill have a look. your reply was really helpful!

The modules offered under a particular degree title with vary massively uni to uni, i wish you the best of luck with your search 🙂

Good afternoon,

I am currently studying for a BSc in Ecology and Wildlife Conservation at the University of Reading. At the university, we offer a range of optional modules, including those in agriculture, zoology, and environmental science, which you may find appealing. Such as, AD2FWE: Farmland and Woodland, GV2CEC: Climate and Environmental Change. This course also offers botany modules such as BI2PW2: Plant World and BI3PDI2: Plant Diversity and Identification.

Another option for a course you could consider is BSc Environmental Management and Sustainability, which is similar to what you have described and has elements of ecology, agriculture, and land managment. This may be a better fit for you to study, and I highly recommend that you look into it.

You may want to look at Ecologist job profiles and Environmental Manager job profiles.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to let us know. We are happy to help.

All the best,
Ella

Hi Mariam45,

I'm assuming you are looking at undergraduate - though our postgraduate Agroecology degree sounds perfect for you.

Here's some links to courses that might interest you at Harper Adams. Because we teach (and research) across agriculture, environmental management, land management, we can bring together the topics of interest to you. If you want to know more, please just ask.

Undergrad
Agriculture with Crop Production Science
Environmental Management
Countryside Management

Postgrad
Plant Health and Biosecurity
Agroecology
