Nottingham Vet Med Prelim 2026

Thought I’d start a thread for those who have applied for the D104 at Nottingham for next year. I am a mature student (30) and Registered Veterinary Nurse. Applied 2 years ago and was interviewed but then rejected.

Hi! This sounds very exciting and I wish you all the best. I am a HS student who is in the same position with an interview and I am wondering if you have any advice from the first time you were interviewed! I don't have too much time to prepare but if you would feel comfortable sharing anything from your first interview experience would be extremely helpful! Thank you and good luck!

Thank you - you too! My advice would be to stay calm and research as much as possible…I’m sure you’ll be grand!

Hi! Im interested in applying for the Sept 2027 start as I have my final school exams (IB) in november 2026 - Ive got a couple of questions and it would be super helpful hearing from someone who actually applied! Firstly, can I apply without submitting any predicted grades and what exactly did you do for work experience in terms of animal handling? Thank you and Happy Holidays.

How did your interview go?

Hi!!! Sorry for my late response I just saw this. Firstly, thank you for following up and asking, thats very kind and I appreciate it! To be honest, I wasnt really able to judge how well it went mostly because anytime I think of the interview, I think of things I could've said/ added and also I was quite nervous so I can't recall too much especially since its been a few weeks now hahah. Secondly, I just read your most recent post - congratulations!!!!! Thats fantastic and I am very happy for you! I suppose if offers are coming out I will soon find out how my interview really went 😬 Again, congratulations! You should be proud and I wish you all the very best and a (late) happy new year!

Hi!! Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. To be honest im not fully sure how the system works in your school, but in ours we give the summer IB exams that are from april-may. What I did was I applied in October (because the deadline for Vet Med is October 15th) with my predicted grades that our Head of IB gave out a bit before applications were due. Im certain that if you discuss this early on with IB coordinators or career counsellors, they will guide you more accurately according to what system they follow! My guess is that you will have to get your prediction earlier on in the year so that you can meet UCAS' deadline.

As for animal handling experience, in my country I wasn't able to get any experience from a vet clinic but my top 2 experiences were 2 weeks at a conservational zoo (with wildlife vets, zookeepers, conservationists, etc), and working weekend at a dog training centre (with animal behaviour experts) for a few months. I would say the most insightful/ useful thing I did at the zoo would be the observational research I did on a specific species. For the dog training centre, it would be understanding which behaviours mean what in companion dogs and how to positively correct them - as well as communicating with clients (pet owners).

Please keep in mind that I have applied for the preliminary year, so I'm not sure what the minimum work experience requirements are for the first entry year if you are looking to apply for the regular 5 yr course. In general when I was searching for universities, I remember in Vet Med, work experience at a clinic was mostly necessary. Definitely get all the experience you can with as many types of animals as you can, not only for applications but for you to explore different areas of the veterinary field! Please let me know if you have any other questions and I hope this was helpful 🙂 Happy late holidays and happy late new year hahah !!
