OCR a level biology exam timings

Does anyone have any recommendations for how to best use time in papers 1 and 2 for OCR A bio?
Ive split the papers into 3ish components: MCQs, long answer (5 marks and above) and shorter answer (4 marks or less).
I know the time recommendation for the MCQs in 20 mins so I’ll stick to that but for the rest I am unsure.
Theres usually 2-3 long answer questions so I was thinking of spending 30 mins on these and then 90 mins on the shorter answer questions cos thats roughly the same time to mark ratio as im used to in as papers.
That gives me 30 mins to finish any questions I haven’t done or quite finished and check my work which seems reasonable but I dont know if i am estimating these times very well and id like a baseline to adapt from for when i start past paper practice.
Id really appreciate it if anyone has any ideas they could share to help me out!

My general piece of advice (as weirdly enough my college structures the papers differently) is to stick with your plan and test it out during revision and if it sticks the real deal/mocks!
I find it oddly enough that I always have extra time in biology tests (even in my mock), so realistically this plan is quite solid! All the best ml :jumphug:

Did a past paper earlier and used these timings:
Multiple choice- 25 mins for around 15 marks
Extended answers (4 marks or more)- 40 mins for around 15-20 marks
Shortish answer (1-3 marks)- 70 mins for around 65-70 marks
The timings included checking each section as well cos i split that too lol

Pretty good
Included checking is fine but I would maybe move some time from multiple choices to shortish answer ones?

Thats a decent idea, im probably gonna do a past paper tomorrow and try cut down the times on extended answers and multiple choice to see how it goes

Ended up doing 80mins on MCQs and extended answer on my mock and the other 55 mins on the rest of the paper

I don't usually differentiate between papers 1 and 2, but in topic tests, I start with the simple stuff - multiple choice etc. then go onto the shorter answers and note down ideas for 6 markers, before doing those at the end. The onces I'm not sure about get skipped and come back to them later
I have no ideas or tips for your exams, but best wishes. You can ignore me from this line now.

If you get it done in your time given that's great but I do think if you can to cut the mcq as 80 mins is too long

Sorry for being unclear  I spend 80 on the multiple choice and the extended answers combined which was almost 40 marks total and then 95 mins on the other 65-70 marks. I just finished another past paper and only did 40 mins instead of 80 as there were a few less extended answer ones so ig it depends on the paper a bit, practice is definitely improving it tho so thanks for the suggestion you made about trialling the timings to see what works!

That makes more sense now :giggle: and I'm glad doing trial runs are working for you :3
