From Research to Reality: How I ended up choosing Law at BCU

Hi everyone, my name is Ru, a final year LLB Law with Business student at Birmingham City University. Let me be honest, choosing a university was not this calm, organised journey where everything fell into place. It was more of scrolling through websites at 2am questioning my life choices. But somewhere between stress-eating snacks and comparing universities, I found Birmingham City University, and suddenly things just clicked. After researching, reflecting, and (yes) overthinking, BCU became the clear choice.

1. I wanted more than just a degree: BCU understood the assignment

Hearing, “We have great academics.” Is great but as a student, you want to hear more than that. BCU said, “Come here and you will actually learn to apply the academics in real life.” The mock courtrooms, the practice-based teaching, the whole preparation for clients and not just multiple-choice questions. That absolutely sold me. I could instantly picture myself standing there, not in an intimidating, dramatic TV- lawyer way. But in a, ‘this is where I’m going to grow, make mistakes and build confidence’ kind of way.

I did not want to graduate knowing how to write a 4000-word essay but not knowing where to stand in a courtroom. BCU absolutely understood that.

2. A reputation that matches the reality

I am not ashamed to admit; I did thorough research! Thorough as in reading student reviews, watching campus videos, stalking university social media pages and basically doing everything except interviewing the lecturers myself. I discovered that most, if not all universities say they prepare you for employment. What made me choose studying Law at BCU was how they demonstrated it.

What appealed most to me was their strong focus on employability and the number of graduates who go on to build solid careers in the legal field. Knowing they have professional links and a track record of developing capable law graduates made me feel inclined to choose studying law at BCU.

3. The supportive environment? 10/10 would recommend

This one mattered more than I expected. Being an International Student, I was concerned about being in an environment that does not lift you up. I did not want to study somewhere that made me feel small, overwhelmed or alone. And BCU felt like they were offering the opposite.

When I looked into their law programme and read up on what current and previous students had to say, the recurring message was the same, “There is great student care and support.” As someone who wanted to study somewhere I could grow, academically and personally without feeling out of place. BCU offered that balance.

4. Facilities that make you feel like you are already in the legal world

During the selection process, the facilities played a role. I remember looking at photos of the campus and thinking, “Okay, this does not look like uni. This looks like they’re preparing people for actual legal careers.”

Walking into BCU’s law spaces feels like stepping into a professional setting, not just another classroom.

- Modern courtrooms
- A well-equipped library
- Great study spaces

It all contributed to an environment where you can take yourself and your future seriously.

5. The right city for opportunity

Birmingham is one of the UK’s major legal cities, something that absolutely stood out to me! It is full of law firms, networking events and professional opportunities but without the overwhelming intensity of bigger cities.

It is ambitious but still liveable. So perfect for a law student who wants to access opportunities while still having room to breathe.

6. What really sealed the deal!

Honestly? It was the combination of everything! The academic structure, the facilities, the environment, the opportunities, it all aligned.

But beyond that, there was something deeper. BCU felt like the right place for the person I wanted to be. A place where I could be challenged, supported and prepared for the path I am stepping into. It felt like the legal career I aspired to have would be perfectly nurtured by BCU.

And not to mention the Law clinics that take student volunteers to help give legal advice to citizens all while working with qualified solicitors. This guaranteed that hands-on experience I had been looking for!

Choosing to study Law at BCU was not a decision made lightly but rather made confidently. It offered the balance I was looking for: professional, modern, supportive and full of growth potential. It was clearly not just one big, “YES” moment, but rather a series of small confirmations. I did not just choose BCU because it is a good university, I chose it because it is the right environment for my journey in law, my development, and the future I envision.

Law is a big step, and I wanted a place that made that step feel grounded, supported and purposeful.

And for me, that place was Birmingham City University.

It’s a good idea to come along to one of our Open Days or take our virtual tour to explore BCU and get a feel if it’s the right choice for you.
