Disability History Month - How we support our students with disabilities.

Starting university is a big step. For students with disabilities, that step can come with extra practical and emotional challenges. This Disability History Month, we’re celebrating progress, highlighting what’s available, and showing how we make student life more accessible.

Here’s a short note from our Learning Disability Nurse Lecturer, Emily, about why this matters to us:

“I’m proud of the culture of support we’ve built here. Students come to university to learn, live and belong, and our job is to make sure every student has fair access to everything they need to thrive."

What support looks like at Staffs:

1 Personalised Support Plans
We encourage open conversations about disabilites and how it affects you. If you have a diagnosis, the Inclusion Team will work with you to create a personalised Student Inclusion Plan (SIP). Student Life, academic mentors and other support teams help make sure your adjustments are put in place.

2 Specialist equipment and funding help
After a one-to-one appointment, the Inclusion Team may recommend specialist equipment or support. We can help you access support workers (where needed) and guide you through funding applications. Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs) can help cover study-related costs, including technology and software.

3 Adjustments in teaching, assessments and placements
Teaching materials are usually uploaded in advance so you can review content early. Sharing your SIP with module leaders helps them make the adjustments you need, such as one-to-one tutorials or extra time in assessments. For placements, the Placement Learning Hub (PLH) can discuss any support you may need, and, with your consent, share relevant information with placement staff.

4 Wellbeing support
Our Mental Health and Wellbeing team offers one-to-one support, wellbeing appointments and specialist advice.

5 Campus accessibility, transport and accommodation
Our campus is designed to be accessible, with facilities and spaces that support a wide range of needs. Students can access university accommodation on campus to help them settle into university life.
