Oxbridge opinions on year 12 resits

Im potentially dropping out of year 12 and resitting next year from sep 2026. It isn’t due to me finding the work difficult or not enjoying my subjects, it is simply due to my mental health which is becoming increasingly dangerous for me.
I have always been aiming for Oxbridge, as I have strong academic abilities and had my eyes on a couple courses there for a while.
I know people will say that I will struggle at Oxbridge if I already have poor mental health now, and I understand that, but I don’t think someone should stop dreaming big just because of these issues, especially if they are taking steps to solve them and get better.
What will Oxbridge thing of me resitting? Will they class all results the same, so they may think I could have resat because I’ve failed year 12 mocks or something? Or would they class this as extenuating circumstances?

Your circumstances will be considered on an individual basis. Good luck in tackling your health issues and academic work!

You are wise to be aware that you should aim to have stable and robust mental health before starting along the Oxbridge path. Contrary to popular impressions, Oxford and Cambridge are not all wofk and no play, but they are academically and socially intense.

Taking time to work on your mental health now is a good idea. You have taken the biggest step by recognising that you have a problem and resolving to tackle it.

Best wishes for good health and academic success.

Same, I want to drop out and rejoin next year. How would I be allowed to?

Discuss possibilities with your school and with your parent(s) or guardian(s).

So many applicants have retaken A-Levels for Oxbridge and quite a lot got made offers but if your mental health will affect your studies, then is Oxbridge's 'intense' 8 week terms the right environment for you?

If it comes up, all you have to say is that you resat because of health issues but your teachers have no concerns about your academic abilities. As someone currently dragging herself through Oxford with mental issues, it's doable but definitely not preferable to dealing with it now, even if it means you have a resit on your record.

I am sorry to hear that you are having difficulties. I hope that you have access to support from a doctor, counsellor etc. It sounds like you have taken the most important step to dealing with mental ill health, which is to recognise that there is something wrong that needs to be dealt with. I hope that things improve and that Oxford becomes less of a drag for you. Have a good vacation!

Yeah that’s what I was thinking, trying to go my a levels with my poor mental health now just isn’t gonna work and will probably destroy all chances of me getting into Oxbridge. I know the result may look bad, but if it wasn’t for academic reasons, hopefully there shouldn’t be too much of an issue and they can be more considerate.
