Do i have a chance?.. applying to oxford

Hello,
I am currently in year 12 and studying Further maths, maths, physics and computer science and my gcse's were 8888877655(very low). I was considering applying to oxford for maths(that is my ultimate passion) but I dont really have any competitions for it and I got a participation in the SMC so now i am considering doing physics (i also love this too but not as much as maths). I am currently predicted 3 A's and 1 A* (ik its still early) say I worked hard for the Senior physics challenge in January and got a good score on that do I have a chance. I am currently ahead in some of my maths and further maths topics but I dont think that will do anything. Also have read 2 maths books so far and listened into 2 physics lectures so far(i have some computer science ec's but not really passionate about doing cs). I am contemplating on if I should just apply to Cambridge as ive been seeing that they are more lenient but I really want to go to Oxford.

You have a real chance if you work hard. Your predicted grades are solid and doing well in challenges like the Senior Physics Challenge will help. Oxford is super competitive for maths so excelling in tests and interviews is key. Physics could be a safer option but if maths is your passion, keep preparing and show your dedication.

This may not matter as much for STEM as for humanities, but please work on your grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Good luck in your applications and exams!

At the end of the day, you have 5 options, you might as well make Oxford one of them. Though keep in mind, Oxford’s maths course is very theoretical! Apparently my stepdad knew an Oxford maths student who didn’t own a calculator.

Try applying to summer schools - UNIQ and Sutton Trust are great, but there are others, so look into it!! I did UNIQ and another Oxford one and whether it gets me in or not I had a great time. A lot of the people on those Summer schools had very similar grades to yours, they’re definitely not bad.

Anything is possible so definitely give it a shot and if you don’t get in, most people don’t, what’s for you won’t go by you. Good luck!

Thank you so much!

Where did you come in your school cohort for gcses?
Is your school high achieving and does it usually send people to Oxbridge?

Nobody from my secondary school(where I did my gcses ) went to oxford and if there where probably like 2 or 3 in total since it was formed. And it is a private school too. I would say I was top 7 to 10% in my year group.

I take it you have changed schools now.I agree with poster 5 and you also get a chance to show your ability with the MAT taken in first term year 13 which can help enormously if you score well.

IF physics is ur passion, physics with medicinal physics is there at UCL, which is quite easy to get, and geophysics bsc imperial. both ahve accceptance rates that are more than 5x as high as oxford. good backups. but the 8s may hold u back
