A Student’s Perspective for Parents Worried About University Life

Hi everyone, I’m a current student at City St George’s, University of London, and I thought I’d share a bit from a student perspective in case any parents are feeling unsure about what uni life is really like for their child.

From what I’ve seen, the main things parents worry about are safety, support and whether their child will cope living away from home, and honestly, I understand why. When I first started, my parents had the exact same questions.

In reality, students get a lot more support than people expect.

There’s academic support, personal tutors, wellbeing services and plenty of places to ask for help. Lecturers are approachable too and you can always email them or visit during office hours.

Safety-wise, the campus is staffed, well lit and feels very secure.

Most students travel in groups, and public transport becomes easy to navigate after the first week or two.

Socially, it’s much easier to make friends than you might think.

Societies, welcome events, induction week and group activities make it very easy to meet people. Even quieter students naturally find their people over time.

Finances are also manageable with planning.

Lots of students work part time, and there are on-campus roles like Student Ambassadors which work well around lectures. The university also has services that help students learn how to budget, manage spending and access financial advice when needed. There are also bursaries and scholarships available that many parents don’t know about.

If any parents want more support or information, City St George’s has a dedicated Parents Hub where you can explore guidance and resources:

If you have specific questions about student life, safety or academics, I’m more than happy to help from a student perspective 😊
