Cambridge views on GCSE resits and making a competitive applicant

Hello guys, I wanted to ask for any advice and tips on how to make my application competitive for med/biomed course for Cambridge. For context I have resat 4 GCSEs without extenuating circumstances, though the colleges I have emailed said I am open apply to the colleges base on my situation, but I know this would significantly disadvantage me anyways. I wanted to know has anyone got in Cambridge w resits qualifications from GCSEs and still got in?

My resits was for improvement (from 6-8/9), and my first attempt examination was at the top 10-15% in my school, idk if that helps anything or even Cambridge would bother to look at both grades in context. But my first sit wasnt too bad I acheieved 4 A star at least..

Please do let me know anyway that I could do do make up for my applications! Thank youu (For Alevels im currently studying Chem, Bio, Maths and EPQ)

So far my excurricular is: Senior maths challenge (silver) Cambridge Biology Challenge (still in progress) Issac Biology Challenge (in progress) Medsoc community Young enterprise program (in progress) Chief editor for my school science journal - and posted a journal for a research on Black scientist’ research 3 weeks work experience in local hospital 1 week work experience in local charity shop Grade 6 in ABRSM Piano Have 5 years of work experience in working at a restaurant reading mentoring for younger kids

Sorry for the long paragraph but i rlly wanted to aim high but however i do know in applying strategically, so Cambridge would just be a target.

Hey, not a STEM student or a Cambridge applicant but I'm told one of the most important things for any sort of medicine course is relevant work experience, which it seems you have. I'm assuming you're in Year 12 now as the Oxbridge deadline for current Year 13s has passed, so I think it would be a good idea to continue pursuing voluntary work in hospitals and the like. Your experience in a charity shop is unlikely to affect your application that much, but I'm sure the mentoring could do if you tied it to pediatrics or something.

As far as GCSEs go - I can't promise that having resat the exams won't hinder you at all, but I can assure you that Cambridge do accept resits. I think it would be a good idea to have your school representative (the teacher writing your UCAS reference) mention why you resat the exams as this will ensure the admissions tutors have access to that contextual knowledge. That sort of thing is one of the main functions of the centre reference, Oxbridge want to see how you've performed relative to your peers. It's how they ensure they're taking the highest achievers from a range of schools.

Tysm for your detailed reply, i would fs to go for longer and more work experience. Would u think cambridge would consider me being top 10-15 percent in my school cohort as a positive impact, or would they even bother to notice it? Ik u r not the admission but any ideas is great. Ty for ur reassurance and advice too! Rlly needed this

I think it's certainly worth mentioning in your reference, I think the admissions team would take it into account. To clarify - was it your initial exams graded at a 6 that put you in the top 10-15%, or your resits? That will have an impact on how they view it so you must ensure your referee is very clear about it.

Oh, 100% worth having in your reference then, because the ones graded higher would likely put you in the top 3-5%. It also demonstrates to the admissions team that you had already performed very well against the backdrop of your school and still wanted to go further. It needn't be a huge paragraph but still, make sure it's included. Good luck with your application next year!

They have known to accept resit student's but I know a handful of resit people who were rejected because their application wasnt competitive enough. I think it was the resits that got them rejected, I can't be sure but its worth applying and see how you get on.
