Disability History Month : How Brighton can support you

Hi Everyone! This month (20 November- 20 December) is Disability History Month. This is a month to raise awareness for disabled people’s fight for equality and human rights and commemorate the history and future of disabled people.

32% of Brighton students state they have a disability, neurodivergence or other condition. As a university we believe it is important to ensure all these students, and other students who may not have reported or may not be diagnosed, are supported as much as possible, to ensure they at the most capable of succeeding with us. Here's some of the systems we have at Brighton.

Find It, Flag It, Fixed It
This idea began when a student invited staff from the University, including our Vice-Chancellor, and BSU to experience our campus in a wheelchair. That powerful experience led to real change.
Now, with bright stickers across all campuses, anyone can easily flag an issue such as a broken door or faulty lift through the University Helpdesk.

Learning Support Plans (LSPs): adjustments to teaching, assessments and access to facilities based on what you need. Once you are enrolled, you can request a LSP on your StudentView, and have a one on one meeting with one of our disability team to give you all the help you can get.

Drop-in & confidential advice: quick guidance on disability evidence, DSA, updating your LSP or general questions - available on all campuses during term time from the Disability & Learning Support Team, who will support you sensitively and respectfully.

Disabled Students Forum: To ensure long-term impact, the BSU and the University have co-created the Disabled Students Forum, co-chaired by Rosie and Professor David Walker, University Pro-Vice-Chancellor who leads our work on education and the student experience. This is a chance for students to discuss their experiences first hand with various university departments. The committee will highlight areas of best practise, identify key areas of improvement and help create solutions.

I hope this helps you see that Brighton is committed to helping disabled students achieve their potential.!
