Biomedical science RSB uni?

So recently i went to an open day at Sheffield university and found that their biomedical resources are amazing. I really want to apply there now but i know its not IBMS accredited.

Is there any advantage to doing an RSB accredited degree?

Also is there any recommendations for universities with good Biomedical science teaching? With good quality research and resources? I cant decide on a 5th option for uni but i dont want to waste the slot.

you don't need an IBMS accreditation unless you specifically want to become an HCPC registered biomedical scientist working in an NHS lab. IBMS accreditation mainly matters for the clinical placement and registration route.
RSB accreditation is different ot this it focuses more on the overall quality of your biological science training like lab skills, research, scientific understanding, and professional development. so it's a nice mark of quality but not essential for most careers
so if you like sheffield and its facilities, not being IBMS accredited isn't a bigf issue unless your goal is the NHS biomedical scientist pathway. For research, biotech, academia, industry, pharmaceuticals, etc it shouldnt hold you back.
also even if the degree isn’t RSB accredited, you can still apply for RSB membership after graduating, so you don’t lose out on joining ta profession if you feel so
im currently studying biomedical science in anglia ruskin and it is amazing!! you get a personal development tutor, and so many other chances for extra help if you need it. its quite lab heavy, you get assessed in the lab a lot, almost every week along with some lab reports and i really think that helps me learn. they're very career focused- not directly in class but what i mean is they provide you so many endless opportunites to help you get a good career so if that's something you're interested in i would definitely recommend ARU!

Hi @shpowell,

It's great to hear that you enjoyed the University of Sheffield's Open Day! I was actually there within the Bioscience team, so I'm glad we made a great impression. Regarding the importance of IBMS accreditation, it's highly dependent on your future career aspirations and whether they require IBMS accreditation. However, if you are unsure of what you currently want to pursue as a career or if you already have an idea that does not align with a role requiring IBMS accreditation, then I would personally choose the university that best fits your needs and preferences. There are post-graduation routes available that can lead to IBMS accreditation, so I would definitely look into these if that's something you're open to pursuing.

Personally, I found that there are many other career options that do not require IBMS accreditation, which align with my aspirations, making this decision less significant for me when I applied. Especially when I fell in love with Sheffield during my open day, I decided that the skills Sheffield offered were more beneficial to me and my career development.

Were there any other questions you had from the open day that I can help answer? ☺️
