Any advice for BioChemMaths?

Hi everybody,

I am currently in year 12 studying Biology (AQA), Chemistry (OCR A), and Maths (Edexcel), and so far Stats and Chemistry are KILLING me. I'm new to TSR and I was wondering if anyone who sees this post (bc idk how many people actually see these sorts of things) is doing/has done any of these subjects and struggled at first and did something specific to improve wether that is something in class such as a specific learning strategy or after school like revision methods/resources. As of now, I have made flashcards for Bio, but so far (knock on wood) it's going well so I'm not THAT worried about it. Whereas in Maths and Chemistry, I don't really know what to do, what websites to use, what channels to watch etc. because I was thinking of getting Medly but I saw a video from 1st Class Maths exposing how bad it is and now I'm TOTALLY lost. I've heard Uplearn is good for all three but we're still waiting on my school to provide login details.

Please help me out, any and all advice is greatly appreciated 😭

Hiiii. I'm in year 13 and I do Bio and Chem as well. I found chemistry really hard at first but the best thing to do is lots of practice questions. I found spending lots of time working through ones I didn't understand and also asking my teacher for help was really useful. I also find making flashcards from the textbook useful (I do AQA but I can imagine OCR is similar). I also watch the organic chemistry teacher on youtube (he does all aspects of chem, not just organic). I don't do maths so I can't give advice on that sorry :frown:. I hope this is useful!

im doing the same alevels but aqa chem and im struggling too 😭 ik u said u find bio good but one of my yr 13 friends reccommended getting biology with olivia's notes and bundles. they're specification specific and quite concise with common misconceptions at the bottom!! ive gotten medly and ngl i barely use it but when im finally free from the shackles of hw and can actually do my own revision ill test it out more and lyk! for maths i just spam questions from active learn pearson textbooks my school provides and then use madasmaths which are lowk difficult questions.

what i realised helped me out in lessons (esp chem) was doing prereading. like right before the lesson id watch a video or read on some notes from an online resources about the basics and get the grasp of some of the concepts, and when the teacher actually explained it it made so much more sense and i was able to ask questions more! so thats helped me out but other than that idk i just got my first mocks and they werent so great ☹️ anyway good luck!!

Yeah for maths I was thinking practice is the only thing that can actually help so I'm gonna do that and I was thinking of doing pre-reading but I never go through with it, but now you've said that it helped you Im going to try to actually lock in and do it + I think ill buy resources and stuffnwhen I feel like I'm genuinely cooked and need proper help If you know what I mean? 😭 anyway TYSN

Hi did my a levels this year. I’m going to hold you hand well I tell you this year two bio and maths and chem specifically that year 2 aqa bio might make you start balding. Ngl if you’re lost in maths at this stage it’s a bit worrying (sorry😖😖😢) what you should be doing to help with maths honestly the only thing you can do is past paper questions use maths genie and well I forgot what my favourite ones were where you can get topic specific questions. You need to get into the habit of doing so many past paper questions that you lowkey start enjoying it that’s the only way for maths. Ooo for stats now I had the luxury of being at a boarding school so I would HUNT DOWN my stats teacher and one to one we will do through everything I don’t understand. Stats papers are like 5/6 questions?I’ll do like 4 and then find her whatever time of day and we would go through everything I got wrong and she would give me more questions. You can do the same if you have teams? Do as many questions as you can mark them and also if you have access to model answers and videos that’s better then the questions you don’t understand send them to your teachers although when it comes to year 2 and the only way you can answer the question is by using specific functions on your calculator or looking at the tables at the back of the formula sheet that’s when it’s best to be 1-1 in person so get help. Also Bicen maths and there was another one, anyways WATCH THEM. Now bio AQA year 1 you’ll think it’s all sunshine and rainbows but then when you start doing stats like crital values and stuff if you constantly have a negative outlook on stats now seeing it in bio will make you feel like you can’t do it. BTW make sure you have the spec downloaded for all three subjects also save exams is probably the GREATEST thing to get. Also when you start doing essays ☹️☹️☹️ Miss Estruch (or whatever) you NEED to lock in with her but brush her predictions. Her laid services are really good. For bio you just need to enjoy it to be able to do well. Also for maths ngl the text book is shockingly good I used the textbook a lot to improve with stats. For reference I did everything I said for maths and stats I went from 30% to only dropping a few silly marks per paper because well ik you’re not in year 13 but when you get to doing past paper after past paper you can see that the papers follow a pattern (for all subjects). Sorry j can’t help with chem I did physics.

I think it really depends on the subject. I’ve been using medley for sciences for about 4 months and personally only encountered some marking inconsistency twice. Other than that, i think its actually been really good for keeping my revision structured. I get that it’s not perfect (especially the Maths side everyone talks about) but I wouldn't say its utterly terrible either. It works for me and i was recommended by my cousin who used it for his gcse last year.
