Options to move to science as a psychology student

I'm currently in my 1st year of a psychology degree but I am really regretting not doing something more science related. I originally chose psychology because I wanted to go into educational psychology however I don't know about that anymore. Ideally, I'd love to do a biomed degree or biology degree, or even pharmacy. Jobs in fields like pharmaceuticals or anything medical (not a doctor though) really appeal to me but I am worried that I'm stuck with the psychology. Is there any way to change later on maybe after finishing my degree, or would I need to change courses now?

You can defo apply to another subject after finishing your degree, provided you have the requirements (e.g. subjects at A-Level). But I don’t entirely see why you wouldn’t want to just switch courses now? After all, if you switch now you won’t have to complete two degrees and would be able to start doing what you want earlier.

Hi there,

You’re not stuck at all. Lots of students realise in first year that their interests have shifted and there are a few solid routes into science-based careers.

If you want a full biomed, biology or pharmacy degree, the cleanest path is switching course now and starting fresh. Admissions teams are used to people doing this in first year, so it’s worth speaking to them soon.

If you choose to finish psychology, you can still move into science later through graduate-entry routes. Things like MSc Biomedical Science, conversion-style lab courses, or postgraduate pharmacy pathways exist, although they may take longer.

The key thing is deciding whether you’d prefer to reset now or build the science later. Both are valid options, and it really depends on what feels right for you. If you want to talk it through, your academic adviser or the admissions team can help map out the options.

Good luck!
Daniel
