What Entry requirements should I aim for with AAC + A in EPQ. Is it worth it?

I take, economics, geography and mathmatics (AAC same order), and I have already got an A in my EPQ. I want to apply for an economics course, I have a strongish PS. Looking at (dreaming for Leeds), Lancaster, Sheffield, Birmingham and UEA or Essex (insurance). Do I stand a chance??

What grades/subjects do they all require?

Leeds AAA (with epq typicaly AAB) (non-specific), Lancaster BSC AAB (ABB sometimes with EPQ) B in maths the BA is same but no subject requirements, Sheffield ABB with epq (maths b), UEA ABB non specific (epq not mentioned), Essex 120 UCAS Points I got 152 predicted with epq, Southampton is ABB with epq.

Note: My school is incredibly strict with predicted grades, significantly more than any other school in the local area. These grades are my mock results in year 12 (I was 2 marks off a B in maths). It is very very rare for students in my school to get less than predicted.

The C in maths is a bit of a handicap. Do you think you will achieve higher?

Your choices are a bit on the aspirational side which is not advisable unless your plan would be to take a gap year and reapply or go through clearing if you didnt get into any of those. For AAC with a C in maths you want to look to have options in the following ranges:
1 or 2 choices in the range AAB or above with the B in maths
2 choices at AAC/ABC/BBC. These will most likely be BBC unless they are done on ucas points or you contact the uni and ask if this kind of grade profile would be considered
1 or 2 choices in the range ABD-CCD (basically options for if you dont get AA in your other subjects and you get a D in maths). These might be foundation year programs or at less reputable unis. These may be more flexible if your offer is in ucas points.
Hope that helps, btw unifrog has a great tool for finding unis based on predicted grades if you have access to a unifrog account 🙂

Thank you so much, Leeds offer a Business Studies with Foundation Year BSc (CCC) that goes into economics bsc, what do you think?

That sounds like a great choice for a solid or possibly a safe option. Additionally I would advise 2 from: Lancaster, Sheffield, Southampton and UEA
The Essex course seems like a great idea as they are going to be more flexible with how ucas points are distributed between subjects. This option is likely a solid or safe choice for you, same as with the foundation year at Leeds.
This leaves you with one more option. You could apply to another aspirational option if you cannot find a uni with an offer lower than foundation year at Leeds or the Essex option that you would actually consider going to but it would be more sensible to find an option at or below your predicted grades, perhaps an option for if you have a terrible couple of exams in maths (praying that you dont though 🙂 ) and end up with a D?
Hello!

As others have said, I would try to have a spread of entry requirements, Lancaster is a great option if you think you can get that B! But also have some easier to achieve offers in case things on the day go wrong. I studied an economics module last year and can say some of the lecturers are really enthusiastic about their subject and were very interesting to listen to! The workload seemed manageable from what I have heard, and they do have a support hub MASH (Maths & Stats help) in case you want any advice or help.

If there is anything you would like to know about our lovely campus or city I would be happy to help!

Best of luck getting the grades!

Hi 19warrya, 👋

It's great to hear you are interested in Sheffield. In my experience, Sheffield has been lenient when it comes to results day. Both my partner (ChemEng) and I (EngLit) received slightly lower than expected a-levels, but we were still accepted as we firmed Sheffield as our top choice. 😄

Sheffield also has a great Access programme which offers reduced entry requirements, you can find out more about Access Sheffield here.

But yes, I definitely think it is worth applying and, as others have mentioned, have a safety net university just in case. But, as you said, if your college gives strict grade predictions, I'm sure you'll be fine !

I hope this is helpful but please let me know if you have anymore questions. 😀

All best wishes,

Hi @19warrya 👋

Hope you are well. Those are a great set of grades, well done and i am sure you will get them too! You do stand a chance with us and do not worry because if you do not achieve your predicted grades and are unable to fulfil our entry requirements, you still may be able to get an offer! We will look at your statement yes and your grades and even offer alternatives to ensure you still have a chance with us if it is possible 😊
