Heard about an Esports Degree? Let’s chat about some of the misconceptions

Hello, I’m Joshua Lindsey, an Esports Lecturer at the University of Staffordshire and University of Staffordshire London. I’d like to share some insight into our Esports courses at our Stoke-on-Trent and London campuses, address common questions, and break a few myths.

Myth: “Esports is not a serious degree”

Let’s address the elephant in the room: we know how esports can be perceived negatively by those unfamiliar with it. The reality is that esports is a serious, fast-growing global industry offering real career opportunities.

Our course is grounded in academic research and shaped by industry input, ensuring graduates are ready to step directly into the workplace. You’ll gain an understanding of what esports involves, including marketing, community management, event organisation, and more.

Myth: “It’s just about playing games to become a professional gamer”

Students don’t come to us just to become professional esports athletes. However, we do offer options for those interested in the competitive side of the industry. We strongly encourage students to join one of our many game-specific societies. These communities meet regularly, offering a great way to make friends, collaborate, and even compete together.

An Esports degree can lead to a wide range of career opportunities, and our course is designed to help you explore the areas of esports that interest you most.

Myth: “You won’t get a job after you finish”

Our approach focuses on transferable skills, skills that apply both within the esports industry and beyond. From day one, we involve students in on-campus events, volunteering, and paid opportunities to help them discover their career interests or path to further study.

As a result, we proudly have one of the highest employment and further study rates at our university. Many graduates find roles in esports, such as partnership relations and event operations, while others move into related fields like sports broadcasting or digital marketing.

Myth: “The degree is only for people with an esports background”

While some students arrive with competitive experience or a strong fandom, our courses are designed for everyone. We take an interdisciplinary approach, covering marketing, broadcasting, and event management within the context of video games and esports. Whether you’re an avid fan or completely new to the industry, you’re welcome here.
