Can you condense a full year research MPhil program into 10 months?

Hi, I'm applying for a full year Research MPhil program in medical science (for 2026-2027). My plan is to start medical school in USA in early August of 2027. I'm wondering if it's ok to graduate in 10 months instead of 12 months so that I start med school on time.
Thanks!

Hey, this is a conversation between you and your potential supervisor! I have the same plan too (med school by late July/August 2027), and my potential supervisor and I agreed that I should be ready to graduate by early to mid-July if I start Sept 2026. For some context, I applied for a research MPhil in the medical science department, also.

Thanks so much for the information. I will discuss with my potential PI then. May I ask you if in general it's ok to start early in Sept/Aug per university policy? And is this a common practice? I know I probably should ask my PI and department for this question too, just to have some idea before I start the conversation and just in case they say no.😉 And, how would you take care of housing during Sept? Thank you!!!

Not sure, my PI just gave me the timeline, and they have had a lot of students. I think it depends on which college you get accepted to and whether they have room for you to board before the term starts. Tbh, I am more worried rn about my acceptance into the program (i had my interview already) and less about the housing.

Almost certainly not. Your time at Cam starts with matriculation - sometime the first week or 10 days of October. You can work all you like before that, but it won't count. Then you have to 'keep term' and every degree has a specific requirement on 'keeping term' it will usually be 3 terms for an MPhil. Then you can submit your work early, but it won't be marked and moderated and free from the viva process any differently to the whole cohort times. If you dig through Statutes and Ordnances you can find out the specifics for your programme, but there is generally little to no flexibility about the start and finish dates unless you are extending finish dates. Your best hope that is Research MPhils are sometimes an outlier and Medical and JBS courses are sometimes outliers. Check Statutes and Ordinances.
