transferring uni

does anyone have any advice on transferring university? i hate the experience ive had so far at uni - i feel like i haven’t clicked with anyone, there’s not really any social aspect and i don’t like the course, as well as many other reasons. i’m heavily depressed and struggling a lot. i’m not sure if it’s a bad idea to transfer, or if i’m even able to at this point, but if anyone has any experience with this please let me know! for context i’m currently at york st john and would love to go to uni of leeds instead for film studies.

I'm sorry that you're not having a great time at your current uni. The first post of the following thread covers most of what you need to aware of - it is old but still relevant:

Have a read through and then come back to this thread if you have more questions.

Hey,

It’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed when your uni experience isn’t what you hoped for. Wanting to transfer doesn’t mean you’ve “given up”; it just means you’re trying to find an environment where you can actually thrive, and a lot of students end up doing exactly that.

Transferring can be possible, but it varies depending on the university, the course, and how far into the year you are. The best first step is usually to check whether the University of Leeds accepts transfers into Film Studies at your current stage. Some places allow mid-year transfers, but most will consider you for second year entry or for restarting first year. You can normally find this info on their admissions page, but emailing their admissions team directly tends to give you a clearer answer.

At the same time, it’s worth speaking to student services at your current university or your personal tutor. They’re used to dealing with students who want to transfer or are struggling, and they can explain the process, funding implications, and deadlines. Most universities have a support team like AskUS at Salford, so have a look to see if yours offers something like that. They can also help you manage the wellbeing side of things, because your mental health matters just as much as the academic side.

If you do decide to move, doing it earlier rather than later often makes the admin smoother, especially when it comes to student finance and re-registering for the next academic year. Changing between years (for example at the end of first year) usually minimises complications. Leeds may ask for transcripts, module descriptions, or predicted grades, so starting conversations now gives you more time to sort that out.

You’re not stuck, and you’re not alone. Many people transfer because their current uni just isn’t the right fit socially, academically, or mentally. Wanting a fresh start somewhere that aligns more with your interests and wellbeing is a valid choice. Whatever you decide, make sure you’re getting support while you navigate it, and take things one step at a time.

Good luck 😊

Hey, I will also be transferring unis as I’m not enjoying my current one. Try to call Leeds and see if they accept year 2 transfers into their course.
