How I manage stress and anxiety at Kingston University

For me, managing stress and anxiety when it comes to uni is all about prevention.A counsellor once told me it’s called ‘setting yourself up for success’. If you know that you have a big stressful deadline coming up, what can you do to make sure you succeed in handing it in on time with minimal stress? The answer is straightforward; by setting up prevention methods to help reduce your stress and anxiety.

An example of this would be making a realistic plan for the following weeks to stick to so it gets handed in on time. Also, acknowledging you will probably feel a bit overwhelmed at some point and so having a backup plan for when you do feel that way like a care package of sorts.

For me this would be:
Taking a day off
Ringing my mum
Going for a walk to clear my head

If things have really steered off course, I would get in contact with my tutors as soon as I can to make a new plan and possibly applying for mitigating circumstances if eligible. Having this plan ready to go helps me feel prepared even when things go wrong with a project and it prevents me freaking out when they do.

You can use this method for things other than deadlines as well. Stress and anxiety pop up at all sorts of weird times, but this technique can make you feel more in control of a situation. Maybe you’re feeling anxious about going to a club for the first time, what can you do to make sure you have a good night? For me, it would be letting my friends know I’m feeling a bit anxious about going, telling them I might need to leave if it gets a bit much and having a plan ready for that scenario like how I’ll get home or where I could go for five minutes to calm down.

It’s important not to struggle by yourself when you’re feeling this way at uni whether it’s to do with the workload or your personal life. Reach out to friends and family so they understand your situation and can support you better. Tell your tutors as well as they deal with this all the time and can help set up a work schedule that’s better suited to you. Use free services offered at your university.
