Block Teaching at DMU

Hi everyone!

I am Ilya, a final year Cyber Security student at De Montfort University. I wanted to share some of my thoughts about our Block Teaching approach. Please feel free to share your own experiences with block teaching in the replies. It will be interesting to see if our opinions match

The Block Teaching model is central to the academic experience here at DMU. Our academic year is structured around four distinct seven-week blocks. During each block, we concentrate entirely on one module, and the assessment for that subject is completed before moving on to the next one.

A core advantage is the opportunity for deep focus. Spending seven continuous weeks on a single module allows me and other students to fully immerse themselves in the material. As we saw on practice, this concentrated engagement often leads to stronger academic performance and better retention of knowledge.

Furthermore, the Block Teaching schedule provides flexibility. Focusing on one module simplifies the weekly timetable, which is extremely helpful for students managing external responsibilities. Whether it's balancing a part-time job, family commitments, or engaging in campus activities, the predictable, single-subject structure allows students to plan their time effectively and maintain a balanced student life.

Finally, the system ensures better feedback. Assessments are finalised at the end of each seven-week period, meaning students receive their results and feedback rapidly. This allows students to monitor their progress, identify areas for improvement, and make necessary adjustments before beginning the next module. It ensures the academic journey is transparent and immediately responsive to student performance.

Please feel free to share your own stories and thoughts about block teaching
