Can you change an a level subject in December year 12?

I’m in year 12 and it’s December and considering changing biology to geography a level and want to know what’s the latest possible time students have successfully switched, and if anyone has any advice or regrets about doing it and how hard it was to catch up.Would love to hear from people who’ve been through it and any revision websites or video recommendations would be appreciated and some reassurance if geography a level is worth it.
I’m also scared to ask my form tutor as he might not let me switch and I don’t know how to approach him about Changing subjects

I switched in like late May or something stupid like that, but it required a lot of begging, and I really regretted not going with my gut around the December period when I first had thoughts of it. I literally bunked classes of the subject that I didn't want to do (don't try this at home), it was that bad. It really depends on the school and I'd say if you're not enjoying it now, you probably won't in the future as the subject gets harder. Do all the catch-up work first, then ask your teachers about switching courses, be prepared to prove your ability in the subject. I had to take a mock exam, you may have to do something similar, but again, really just depends on your college. Really emphasise why you would be happier taking geography. I don't take it myself so I can't offer any specific advice about the subject, but I think doing your catch-up work should help you figure out whether you genuinley enjoy it. Good luck, I wish you the best.

Quite a few people change subjects during the first term of year 12, form tutors will be used to this 🙂
Did you do gcse geography?
My advice would be to speak to the head of geography at your sixth form and ask them whether they think you could catch up on the content over Christmas given your previous studies (mention gcse if relevant and anything like good grades in essay subjects etc).

Sounds like geography is a great option for you then!
Id really advise you to contact the geography department at your school and ask if you can switch. Make it clear youre prepared to catch up on any work and ask if theres any support for you to do this (some schools offer extra sessions for support with some subjects that you could attend for example).

Hi,

You can usually change your A-level choices during the first term of Year 12. However, it’s best to speak to your teachers or your form tutor as soon as possible to discuss your options. They can advise on whether it’s feasible, catching up on content missed, how to manage the workload, and point you toward useful resources for revision.

Hope this helps,
