Hiya,
I'm in y13 right now also applying for med. My unis are oxford, Bristol Edinburgh and Newcastle and currently have 3/4 interviews (waiting on Edinburgh rn).
I think the most important things to prioritise during y12 itself is making sure you get the predicted grades needed for med. It might differ depending on the college/sixth form you go to, but for me my main exams were in June and if you wanted a re-do you had to wait until September which meant revising for predicted grade exams alongside UCAT (which you really want to avoid). So above all else, ensure you build good relationships with teachers and lock in for predicted grade exams; for any med course I'd say you need 3As, but if you're looking at London or Oxbridge (or even Bristol and Scotland), ideally you want a couple A*s in the mix as well.
In terms of work experience, I think it really depends on how well you've been able to reflect on the experience you've already had. Personally, I did 3 different placements over a year; two in hospitals and one at a GP surgery, but I honestly think it was overkill and some of the later placements felt a bit repetitive. If you make sure to write down and reflect as much as you possibly can on your work experience, then I think the GP plus hospital will be enough. It's more important that you have examples of how you saw doctors working in a team, where you saw empathy demonstrated, and communication skills etc rather than listing the number of places you went to. You've also seen examples of primary and secondary care by being in both a GP and hospital environment, so that'll be helpful as well.
The GOSH young visitors programme looks great, but it's worth applying for some other programmes as well this term as they can take ages getting back to you (I remember I applied for my volunteering in November and I could only actually start in March lol) and it's best to have your volunteering mostly done by the time you get to y13. Have a look at local charities for any volunteering opportunities as well; anything that involves interacting with the public is helpful. I know people who have managed to work or volunteer at a care home, which would provide a nice contrast to working at Great Ormond Street, so that might also be worth looking into. Have a look online for what's local to you and maybe ask around at college to see what people in previous years have done. I volunteered at my local hospital as a dining companion, which was good to talk about in my personal statement etc but was actually really repetitive during the time, and I often felt like I was waiting around trying to find something to do when lunch had finished, so I don't know if I'd recommend that specifically. I also did a buddy programme where I was paired with a differently abled young person and we'd go on outings to the shops etc which was really fun and definitely more interesting, so I'd definitely recommend something like that.
Hope that helps, and lmk if you have any more qs. Best of luck!

I’ve been applying for volunteering and my local hospital trust only allows one week work experience per person.. I’m struggling to find volunteering to do, although I’ve been applying to 5+ online applications, and have went to 3 care homes which said they don’t do volunteering. I’m starting to panic as it is January - what are your biggest tips for finding them?
