Expectations of women in literature

Hey!
For a my drama GCSE devising, we’re looking at how the pressures placed on women by society have changed, and whether they’re the same or different, more or less today than 200 years ago, but all through the lens of literature and book characters. I’m looking for examples of female characters who have either succumbed to, overcome or battled with society’s expectations for them. For guidance, I’m already looking at people like Jane Eyre and Amy March from little women. I need a mix of modern and classic texts to show the progression through time, and preferably they should be fairly well known. Thanks in advance

Boccaccio's Decameron would be a prudential choice if you can go back as far as the 14th century
