Accommodation at Uni

Hi everyone, I am wanting to join uni and was just wondering whether people are struggling with sports storage if you stay in university halls and I'm wondering what I could do.

Hello! @j_meanley89 🙂
Could you explain a bit more about what you mean by sports storage? i.e. what kinds of things do you think you wouldn't be able to store?
University accommodation does vary by university. If you want to have a look at the kinds of university accommodation, I would recommend visiting at open days or you can have a look at UEA's accommodation finder online for a virtual example.
A lot of people buy different storage accessories that they can either put under the bed, above the wardrobe, on walls/doors etc... there is a great selection out there for different types of storage!
If you mean bigger things like bikes etc... universities will have things like bike sheds for outdoor storage.
I hope this helps! If you provide more information I may be able to give you a more specific answer! 🙂

Hey @j_meanley89 ,

I'm assuming you're meaning personal sports equipment - honestly, it'll vary massively as to how much space/what the rules are around larger equipment items in different university halls! I'd say its worth dropping an email to any halls you're interested in to get their specific advice, just so you've got the right advice for the places you're looking at staying.

Usually as long as things fit into your room and they're not on the Halls list of banned items (usually things like candles (open flames!), large electronics, potentially dangerous items etc) you might find you'll be fine - if you're thinking something like a snowboard/skis/footwear or clothing I imagine you'll be okay, but worth checking with the halls near the university you're considering! You might find things like bikes have locked storage and aren't allowed inside - again, might vary. If you're looking to go to Open Days most university accommodations will be available to visit/speak to as a part of the day, so you could always ask then 😊

All the best!

Hey @j_meanley89,

Some great advice above; it's definitely worth sending an email to any halls of residence you're considering for further guidance.

If the sports equipment is particularly large and not frequently used, you could always consider putting it in a storage unit. Some storage facilities (Big Yellow/Safestore) may be able to offer you a student discount on a small storage unit that you can access whenever you need to. Do note that this option can still be relatively expensive, and obviously isn't ideal if you use the equipment on a daily basis.

Make sure to realistically consider what equipment you'll need whilst at uni - if it's home gym equipment, it may be both easier and cheaper in the long run to purchase a membership to a local gym or use university facilities instead of paying for transportation/storage costs. If it's equipment for a particular sport, reach out to your chosen universities or ask questions on Open Days about the facilities and equipment already available for that sport.

Hope this helps,
Eve (Kingston Rep).

I would say sports equipment for hockey and cricket as well as maybe some other sports I'd pick up

Hi there,

The best thing to do about this would probably be to go and have a look around the accommodations you are thinking of choosing so that you can see how much room they might have! See if there is an open day coming up, or see if you can arrange tours with the accommodation on another day.

It is unlikely that there will be loads of space, however this will differ depending on the uni and which halls you choose. There may be space under the bed to store things like this, but again you would need to have a look.

You could also contact the accommodation directly, or through the uni accommodation team, and see if they can answer any questions about how much space there may be.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador.

Thank you providing this information!
As others have mentioned, you will have space for storage under your bed etc... but it does vary by university.
The best thing to do is to have a look at the university accommodation at open days!
I hope this helps!
