Struggling with cleaning and analysing statistical data

Anyone here who doesn’t have a technical background and have to be handling research data (cleaning, analysing and report writing)
Hi there!

Research methods and data analysis is a common part of university courses with an element of quantitative research/stats in it.

What course are you studying? What kind of data have you got?

I did not come from a technical background having come to uni to do Psychology (a stats-heavy subjects at Bath) having done French, Psychology and Chemistry A-Level. However, some things that helped me learn about how to clean my data were...

How2Stats.com's Youtube Channel for basic SPSS tutorials
Andy Field's Discovering Statistics website
Outlier labelling rule vid
Statistics How To website

Data cleansing and analysis and the steps you need to take will vary by course - is this something you can ask lecturers/your peers' advice on to see what approach they usually take or are taking? Here at Bath we have the MASH team (Maths And Stats Help) who are here to help non-technical people with whatever maths or stats problems come up in their course - does your uni or college have anything similar? Is there anywhere you can access examples of reports with statistical sections? What about the articles on your subject on Google Scholar - what do their results and discussion sections look like?

Hope this helps a little bit but if not or you have any more questions please post away 🙂

Hi there,

It can be tricky learning these new things for uni when we haven't done them before. I would suggest talking to your tutors about this and see if they have any resources that they recommend for cleaning and handling data. The links posted here look good too, so have a look through them and see if this helps you at all.

If you have an academic advisor or personal tutor it may be a good idea to talk to them about this too and see if they can help you at all. They should be able to point you in the right direction and sometimes you can schedule a meeting with them so you have lots of time to go through it, rather than just 5 minutes at the end of a class.

Ask your peers too as they may understand things you don't and vice versa so you can all help each other. It is worth asking as someone may be able to help!

Looking on places like Youtube sometimes helps as they have videos which go through it. I'm not sure if there are any for what you want to look at, and of course you need to check they come from a reliable source but they are usually quite good for understanding the explanations.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador.

Hi @JTRose1993 👋

Hope you are well. Unfortunately, i do not have a technical background as i did psychology, business and biology in college and am currently a psychology student in university. For statistics, i tend to use excel and SPSS to analyse my data. Have you tried talking to your personal tutor or any lecturers who might be able to help? There should also be your department contact team who would help you or even the tech department as well as they are pretty good at this stuff! Sorry i can't be of more help but i hope you get in touch with these people and use online help as well! Hopefully it gets sorted out soon 😊
