Student finance

I did my GCSEs and A levels here, currently on my gap year, looking forward to going to university in September 2026. I've lived here for 4 years and will only get ILR in November, and my mum will get it in July (I'm a dependent on her). Am I eligible for student finance with home fee criteria?

Hi there. We don't decide home or international fee status, it will be the university who determine the fee status. But we can tell you if you would be eligible for a loan from SFE.

What is you and your mums nationality? Where were you living before moving to the UK? Thanks, Leah.

Hi there, is your mum working in the UK and is it November next year when you receive your settled status? Thanks, Jason

Hi lalalala78,

From what you have advised, it sounds like you would be eligible for Tuition Fee Loan only support as the family member of a settled person. When you gain indefinite leave to remain, this would be classed as an event change in residency status, meaning you would qualify for full support as a home student which includes the Maintenance Loan as well as Tuition Fee Loan however, it can only be awarded from the next available quarter once it is granted.

If you gain the indefinite leave to remain status in November and start on the January intake of the course (2027), you could apply as a home student in your own right.

Thanks, Clare

What if I receive the indefinite leave to remain in June? Would I still be able to go to university this September?

Hi,

If you receive your new status in June then you may be eligible for finance as home student. You would need to apply as soon as the applications open and send us proof of your status when it changes to ILR. We can then confirm for definite if you're eligible.

Thanks,
Claire

So just to clarify, I should submit my university application now and then when student finance opens submit my application?
