Engineering at Warwick

Opinions on Engineering at Warwick? Specifically the course unspecialised in the first year where you can specialise? All opinions welcome!

It’s a good course. In the first year everyone studies the same core engineering topics, and you choose your specialisation later.
This is helpful if you are not sure what area you want yet. You get a broad foundation first, then you decide what you enjoy.
Overall people say the course is solid and flexible.

My young person started Sept 25 and is really loving it. He's made some great friends in his accommodation and what he's learnt in the first term is incredible! He had offers from Durham, Sheffield, Nottingham and Loughborough. He struggled to choose between Durham and Warwick but he's really pleased with his decision.

PS he was really attracted by the breadth in the first year as he was undecided about his preferred engineering discipline. Several students at university visits said they entered with one discipline in mind but ended up specialising in a different one!

Hi!

I'm a third year BEng Systems Engineering student currently on a placement year. I personally have really enjoyed my time studying engineering. I will say one of the selling points for me was that in first year everyone is on general engineering. Everyone does the same modules, regardless of what type of engineering stream you're on, which is good because 1. It gives you insight into each stream so you can make a good decision about what you want to specialise in, 2. You get the basics of programming, electricity, materials, etc, which will be beneficial in the long run in industry, 3. You get closer to everyone and it's a great way to make course friends.

Also, the teaching quality is very good. We get lots of support from our supervisors, personal tutors, professors, etc. Professors will give a range of material, resources, or readings to help you with your learning. Labs are also supported by postgraduates and teaching assistants, which I've found to be very valuable especially when dealing with lab equipment you've never dealt with.

Your first year can feel overwhelming, as the contact hours for engineering (especially compared to other courses) are very high. There may be lots of lectures, labs, and occasional seminars, but the good thing about Warwick is that it is a campus uni and in first year, everyone gets to live in student halls on campus. This makes your life so much easier as you can go back to your accommodation in between lectures, you can walk to your labs in under 5 minutes, etc.

Hope this helps, please let me know if you have any other questions!
