Where should I go for journalism?

Hello! I am applying for journalism at some different universities, I want to be London based predominantly but I'm quite stuck between UAL and City St George's. UAL has a Photojournalism course that I think would be interesting but I also like the look of the campus and Journalism course of City St George's. Does anyone have any insight that they could provide? It would be really appreciated, thank you!

Hi @lizdoylie , it’s great that you’re already thinking carefully about where you want to study journalism, that clarity will really help you. You’ve shortlisted two strong options, and each offers a very different experience, so it’s completely normal to feel torn.

I have a couple of tips that might help you make a decision.

1.

Visit "Open Days" if you can, it's great to be on campus, check out the studios or newsrooms, and talk to tutors and current students. This will give you a real sense of the course vibe that a website can’t convey. Personally, I was an international student and browsing the web, I found Youtube recording of my course's Open Day with my course leader and a fellow student talking about the ethos of the course - that cleared up a lot of doubts.

2.

Connect with alumni on LinkedIn, look at the kind of work they are doing now, the student work on the course web page - this will help you learn anecdotes and personal stories about being on the course and in the campus, which is great when making a choice.

3.

If you're drawn to visual storytelling, documentaries, or want to build a strong creative portfolio, UAL is amazing. The creative environment, industry connections, and hands-on approach can be a big plus if you see yourself working in multimedia or visual journalism.

4.

Finally, it's all about understanding what kind of journalism you lean towards - whether it is more visual, investigative, or editorial, and to understand where your own work might fit.

Hope this helps in making a choice! Best of luck for your applications!

Hey! Great to hear you're looking at journalism courses in London. I'm a current BA Journalism student at City St George's, so I can share a bit about what it's like!

The course is very practical - we work across TV, radio, digital, magazine, newswriting, etc so you'll get a hands-on experience with the studios and equipment from the start. The lecturers have strong industry backgrounds and they're amazing to work with so you'll get a lot of guidance on developing your writing and practical skills.

The campus is lovely! It's super easy to get around and our TV studios and newsrooms were developed in consultation with experts from media organisations, BBC and ITN. Here's a link to see the studios: Journalism facilities at City St George's

If you can, visiting the campus on Open Days or joining online events would be really helpful for getting a sense of the environment and seeing the facilities. If you'd like any further insight into the course structure or student life at City St George's, let me know and I'll be happy to chat!
